Offering a unique philosophical, theoretical and process-focused introduction to one of the cornerstones of CBT: assessment and case formulation.
Updated and expanded to take account of the vast developments in the field of CBT since its first publication, this second edition follows a clear two part structure: Part One introduces trainees to the key theory, practice and processes of assessment and case formulation, Part Two provides practical illustrations of the theory through 12 extended case studies, considering both simple and complex presenting issues.
Each of these chapters follows a set structure to enable easy comparison. Offering all they need to know about this crucial part of their training, this is essential reading for trainees on any CBT course.

Excellent resource for CBT studies and practice
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2021Verified Purchase
This is my favourite of all the CBT textbooks I own. It’s written in a very clear format & explanations, with simple language (I’ve found other books are written in poncy, academic speak which is unhelpful for students trying to get a good grounding in the subject). The case studies show how the theory works in practice and cover a variety of client presentations. Would highly recommend this book to anyone studying CBT.

This book is set out into 3 different sections ...the first is the debate of how to do the assessment and case formulation. The second is some case study type examples. the third section is a single chapter of discussion
I have found the first section to be both helpful and a little over done . The second section does deal adequately in terms of case assessment and case formulation but I feel that it could deal with the actual therapy plans a little better. The premature use of exposure can cause much distress and client resistance and there was no discussion of alternatives or timing for this type of therapeutic intervention
A worthwhile text that arrived in good time

A must have for psychologists!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 May 2020Verified Purchase
As a psychologist, I find this book to be a key piece on my bookshelf. This is useful for both trainee and qualified psychologists. I enjoy the way the book is structured and find it has great questions for consideration. The book is geared more towards ‘traditional’ CBT, so not as inclusive of third wave CBT approaches. It would be great to see this in future editions!
