Essentials of Molecular Biology, Fourth Edition focuses on the fundamental aspects of molecular structure and function by reviewing key features and along the way, capsulizing them as a series of concise concepts. Thus, students are encouraged to place the reductionist knowledge of molecular biology into broad contexts and thereby develop both academic and personal meaning for this discipline.

About the Author
George M. Malacinski, Professor of Biology, Indiana University As an undergraduate Prof. M studied biology and chemistry at Boston University. He did undergraduate research on the bacteriophage life cycle and became interested in the value of prokaryotic organisms for understanding fundamental life processes. As a graduate student at Indiana University he researched phosphorus metabolism in bacteria. For postdoctoral research (at the University of Washington-Seattle) he broadened his training by studying the developmental genetics of the mammalian pancreas. Returning to Indiana University as a faculty member he established a research program in the molecular genetics of early amphibian embryogenesis. His research interests most recently have included the analysis of molecular regulatory mechanisms of early muscle cell differentiation. He has taught Molecular Biology to undergraduates for the past 10 years.

Essentials of Molecular Biology THIRD EDITION
Reviewed in Japan on 23 November 2022Verified Purchase
Third edition still now is a good book for beginners to learn molecular biology, although the book was published in 1998. This book includes the essence and fundamentals of molecular biology, so still OK to read now. Earnest professors and investigatores wrote each chapter and their interviews at the front of chapters encourage us to study molecular biology. Unfortunately fourth edition is not attractive. I do not recommend to buy 4th. edition.

Good Introductory College Level Textbook
Reviewed in the United States on 24 July 2013Verified Purchase
Overall, this is a well done textbook. I greatly appreciated that the language used is straightforward and clearly describes the topics. The figures were also helpful in illustrating some tricky molecular concepts.
I will caution, though, that this is definitely a introductory-college level textbook. I will definitely be keeping it for reference and background information, but when I tried to use it for graduate-level molecular genetics it fell short and was not detailed enough.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Reviewed in the United States on 14 July 2016Verified Purchase
Worst professor ever.. so what are the odds that this is the worst textbook ever written? HIGH. Don't buy this. Please don't buy this. If it's mandatory for your class, you won't understand any information from this puzzle. Buy a different book. The content in this book is just re-worded in lengthy and confusing sentences so it's not plagiarized.
