5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommendable for students, professionals and rock fans alike!
Verified PurchaseIf you're into rock music and want to learn more about it's history and evolution, and even expand your listening experience, then look no further. A work like this cannot be practical and complete at the same time - it does not pretend to be either. The tone is neutral, as would be expected from an academic study book, yet the selection of material itself is already an expression of an opinion. Chart success is often used as an indicator of relevance for an artist or genre, which has its obvious limitations: bands like Big Star, which did not have chart success but were considered seminal by many popular rock bands in the 90ies and 00ies, are not mentioned. Also, bear in mind that it is written from a US American perspective and therefore only takes into account the anglo-saxon interpretation of Rock: you'll find mainly US and UK artists, with some attention to Canada's most influential artists, without whom modern rock and pop could not be understood (The Band, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell...). So for example no Kraftwerk nor any mention of Krautrock. That's a pity, but shouldn't spoil the fun. In fact, if you use the book with the online videos and other media resources, and as an accompaniment to the Coursera MOOC hosted by Prof. Covach, you'll get a lot of mileage out of it.
Highly recommendable for students, professionals and fans alike!

1.0 out of 5 stars Excelente libro, pésimas condiciones del ejemplar
Verified PurchaseTomé un curso con el autor de este libro y verdaderamente es un excelente académico y su libro es un muy buen material para entender el desarrollo del Rock. Sin embargo, pésimo vendedor (Lib UP Books!). El libro llegó con el empaque roto, la esquina de la portada doblada y manchado de humedad. Voy a procesar el reembolso y conviene más pagar la sexta edición con sus recursos en línea. Lástima, me gustan los libros en físico pero esto no.

5.0 out of 5 stars He is very good and the book is well written and clear
Verified PurchaseI am in a class with the author of the text. He is very good and the book is well written and clear. I like a text with white space. Not jammed page after page with 10 point text.
