Epicoene is Jonson's most daring departure from comedy's normal direction and purpose; instead of leading its characters from sorrow to joy and reaffirming the harmony of the social group, it ends in lack, loss and disharmony. The introduction discusses the play's pervading concern with sexual decorum (or lack of it) and shows how each of the play's socially disruptive characters is matched with an appropriate mode of disorderly speech, while the imagery stresses the ideas of social division and disorder.

About the Author
Ben Jonson (1572-1637) was an English dramatist and poet, whose reputation amongst playwrights of the period is only second only to Shakespeare's. Although Jonson found little success as an actor, his reputation as a dramatist was firmly established in 1598 with Every Man in his Humour. This sucess was followed by Every Man out of his Humour and the classically influenced satire Cynthia's Revels. Jonson wrote all of the major comedies upon which his reputation is now based during the period 1605 to 1614.

A great edition
Reviewed in Germany on 11 December 2018Verified Purchase
I bought this edition for a Literature class and loved it - while we can talk about the play itself for hours or days, I just want to point out that other classmates had gotten a different version that included all notes at the end of the book, while this one has explanatory notes and translations as footnotes, which is much more useful. Highly recommended edition.
