A newly updated edition of the landmark translation by the esteemed Biblical scholar
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Judaean desert between 1947 and 1956 transformed our understanding of the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism and the origins of Christianity. These extraordinary manuscripts appear to have been hidden in the caves at Quumran by members of the Essene community, a Jewish sect in existence before and during the time of Jesus. Some sixty years after the Scrolls' first discovery, this revised and much expanded edition of The Dead Sea Scrolls in English crowns a lifetime of research by the great Qumran scholar Geza Vermes.
As well as superb translations of all non-biblical texts sufficiently well preserved to be rendered into English, there are also a number of previously unpublished texts, and a new preface.
Since its first publication in 1962, The Dead Sea Scrolls in English has established itself as the standard English translation of the non-Biblical Qumran Scrolls and as giving an astonishing insight to the organization, customs, history and beliefs of the community responsible for them. This seventh edition will contain new material, together with extensive new introductory material and notes.

- Reviewed in Australia on 14 December 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI never knew that the Essenes were the writers of the Dead Sea Scrolls. As a strictly religious person, if it didn't make it into the Bible then there is good reason for that. It was a great book that was hard to put down. Thank you and God bless you. Brian
- Reviewed in Australia on 23 March 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseExcellent translation of the dead sea scrolls and a must have for disciples that are searching for the truth.

- Reviewed in Australia on 2 August 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is the updated 7th edition of this book. And a very readable translation.
Lots of new material has been added or improved upon from earlier versions.
Another Penguin Classic for the collection. Size is standard for all volumes published across this range. Other reviewers have complained that this volume is not complete.
Well it is, if you remove biblical scrolls, which most people would already have.
Numerous notes and introductions to the texts makes this volume a great reference.
It's a must have for historians and students of the era. Recommended
- Reviewed in Australia on 11 June 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseTiny font. Hard to read even with a magnifier.
- Reviewed in Australia on 19 August 2022Verified Purchase...on my bedside table, when I am reading one chapter from each of the four books a night, I can only assure you that they will illuminate your faith and widen your mental boundaries :-)

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseDinler tarihi için çok önemli bir eser. Geza Vermes'in Türkçeye çevrilmiş kitabı piyasada bulunamıyor maalesef ve pahalı. İngilizce biliyorsanız oldukça iyi.
