Purchase options and add-ons
The art of writing fiction successfully requires not only talent but craft. This book is a guide to that craft - for writers who want to understand and master the basics of what makes a novel or story work well.
The principles and sound practical advice offered arise from Garry Disher's own deep experience as a professional writer, as well as a teacher of writing, an editor of collections, and a judge for fiction awards. Disher illustrates his points with examples from many other Australian and international fiction writers, presenting a candid picture of the pleasures and pitfalls across a diversity of fiction-writing experiences.
Ranging across from the most significant elements of fiction, such as plot characterisation and voice, to fine details like the use of tense, Disher's hands-on advice can only help fiction writers write better fiction.

About the author

Garry Disher lives in Australia and is the author of over 40 books: novels, short story collections, writers' handbooks, history textbooks and children's fiction. His Challis and Destry police procedurals, and his Wyatt crime from the inside thrillers, are gaining international recognition, winning best crime novel of the year awards in Australia and Germany and appearing on best books of the year lists in the USA. Garry has toured Germany twice and the States once, and counts a scholarship year spent in the Stanford University creative writing school, early in his career, as one of his most important formative experiences.

This book is about the elements of fiction ,its changing nature and how to find ideas for your story.Regarding plotting the author states that traditional fiction, has faith in history and human perfectibility; innovative writers argue that the world is governed by chance, coincidence and chaos, and so their fiction may be devoid of values or themes, apparently inconsequential, and directionless. They write about characters who are free of history, with no origins or destinations, who don't learn, have insights, make decisions or resolve difficulties.
One strenth of the book is its discussion of point of view, dialogue, setting and planning with concrete examples.
.

Particularly worthwhile were the invaluable tips Disher gives to help new writers to get over the hurdles most likely to stop a newbie in their tracks: writers block, lack of ideas, and diagnostics to get a story back on track.
New writers: read and learn!
Five stars!
