Product description
Review
"The book is user-friendly in that it is logically organized, provides examples and exercises, and presents a clear picture of the needs assessment process. The provision of real-life examples is particularly important and helpful to the reader, in that they make the content come to life."--Michael Woodford (6/1/2012 12:00:00 AM)
"The strength of the book is that it provides a quick and comprehensive overview of assessment. Upon reading the text, my students have been better prepared to learn (in more depth) the specific concepts covered in the book. It really has helped me 'set the stage' for my students to develop skills necessary to conduct an assessment (in-class learning), and apply their skills to a real-world situation (community-based assessment projects)."--Ellen Lopez (6/1/2012 12:00:00 AM)
"The Soriano text is excellent in providing graduate students with basic knowledge on how to conceptualize the needs assessment process, design the instruments for the study, and how to analyze and present the data. The value of this book is in its simplicity. The chapters are logical, building on the one before it. The style and readability of the text is excellent."--Frederick L. Ahearn (6/1/2012 12:00:00 AM)

Hard read but so worth the money. I am in a graduate program and I think that this book is a must have for anyone required to perform a needs assessment in school or work.

A dense but valuable resource

This was a dense read, but it worth the effort for a needs assessment novice. The author provides a thorough guide to the needs assessment process with plenty of helpful examples.

General, not detailed
Reviewed in the United States on 16 June 2014Verified Purchase
This book is not sufficiently detailed for professionals. It may be adequate as an introduction for college/undergrad students in the USA studying social work.
The book takes the reader through examples that are lengthy to read and not realistic enough and often obvious, so they defeat the purpose. It does not present a coherent theory of needs assessment nor of how they can be conducted in practice. It does not link back to the areas of knowledge that inform what and how must be assessed such as social sciences, gender analysis, economic development, etc.
