The Encyclopedia of Communication Theory provides students and researchers with a comprehensive two-volume overview of contemporary communication theory. Reference librarians report that students frequently approach them seeking a source that will provide them with a quick overview of a particular theory or theorist - just enough to help them grasp the general concept or theory and its relation to the discipline as a whole. Communication scholars and teachers also occasionally need a quick reference for theories. Edited by the co-authors of the best-selling textbook on communication theory and drawing on the expertise of an advisory board of 10 international scholars and nearly 200 contributors from 10 countries, this work finally provides such a resource.

More than 300 entries address topics related not only to paradigms, traditions, and schools, but also metatheory, methodology, inquiry, and applications and contexts. Entries cover several orientations, including psycho-cognitive; social-interactional; cybernetic and systems; cultural; critical; feminist; philosophical; rhetorical; semiotic, linguistic, and discursive; and non-Western. Concepts relate to interpersonal communication, groups and organizations, and media and mass communication. In sum, this encyclopedia offers the student of communication a sense of the history, development, and current status of the discipline, with an emphasis on the theories that comprise it.

Review

"....In two volumes, the editors have provided an overview of the subject broad enough to allow users to appreciate the interconnectedness of the principles of communications in a general sense, and narrow enough to focus only upon communication theory."--A. Todman (4/1/2010 12:00:00 AM)

Regents’ Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Karen Foss has been on the forefront of scholarship that incorporates and legitimizes marginalized voices in the communication discipline. As an early feminist scholar, she examined women’s forms of expression and how those differ from and expand what counts as important communication. She is also known for her extensive work on Harvey Milk, the first gay supervisor in San Francisco. In integrating diverse voices into communication, her work invites new understandings of communication and social change and expands the toolbox of options for communicators. Karen holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Iowa and an MA from the University of Oregon. She and her husband live in Albuquerque.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's excellent!!

It's a very useful, well written and interesting encyclopedia about communication theory. The only problem in the Kindle version is that it doesn't have a table of contents. You need to search by theme or author and if you are just starting to know about this wonderful theme you will be frequently lost. The positive news in the Kindle version is that the price is a real bargain. I bought it and it has been vey useful since then!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought the Kindle edition
Reviewed in the United States on 18 May 2013

The Kindle edition of this two volume set sold for something ridiculously cheap like $4 or so some months back, which is what I bought. It's usable, but not great. Like the two previous review state, there's no table of contents, no linked index, etc. It's actually not even paginated. I wanted to cite it, and went to the "Look Inside" feature of the product description to find the page I was trying to cite (which was fortunately included in the preview; the next few pages weren't). There are also tons of typographical errors as another reviewer mentioned.

However, I don't actually see the Kindle edition for sale currently, so if you're really wanting buy the hard copy books, they're a nice resource. I've used the Kindle edition several times, despite its shortcomings. I can search the text for key terms, so that's really all I need. These books are quite expensive, so I don't think I would recommend them for students.. but if you're a communication scholar looking to fill out reference-type texts for your personal or institutional library, I think these volumes would make a great addition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is this just a rough, rough draft?
Reviewed in the United States on 6 September 2012

While it contains many useful articles, it's not useful (or useable) as an e-book. No table of contents, no linked index, no useable search. How does one find an article? Also, it seems like an early draft--lots of typo's and garbled paragraphs. I gave it 2 stars because it's so much cheaper than the bound version. But as a readable resource for the scholar or student, it is, sadly, a one-star book.
