5.0 out of 5 stars A very efficient tool

If you want to master modern world history, this book is a very good help. The author Norman Lowe give you in 614 pages a very fine overview of the period 1914-2005. The focus of the book is the political and economical history. If you want to read about cultural history you should not buy this book. The main quality of the book is the very clear and educationally form and language. I am a danish teacher in history in the high school. As a non-native englishreader I really appreciate the language in the book. It is very precise, but not too intellectual and snobby. The book contents 6 parts with 27 chapters in all. In the first half of the book Part One explains the international relations and the main wars and conflicts. Part II and III covers the fascism and communism. Part IV deals with USA. Part V and VI deals with The Third World discussing the problems after decolonization and the contemporary global problems. I am going to buy more books by Norman Lowe in the Palgrave Master Series among them "Twentieth-Century Russian History" and "Modern British History".

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful for IB History Review
Reviewed in the United States on 3 April 2009

This book corresponds perfectly to the IB SL History syllabus (HL might need additional resources) and as such has been extremely useful for reviewing and studying for IB exams in May. The text is organized around topic questions such as, "What caused World War I?" or "What were the failures of the League of Nations" with supporting perspectives and snippets from historians with various points of view, extremely helpful for the broad essay questions.

The fourth edition is practically identical to the first, second and third editions, but with minor revisions and reformatting, some additional pictures, aside from the newly created "history" which occurs between revisions of the book.

As with any review book, I wouldn't recommend using this to learn new topics if studying for an exam. It's useful only for bringing back and refreshing old, perhaps forgotten concepts or events. All in all I'm confident I'll continue to use this in college!

Great book; great detail in the events that took place throughout the world and international relations are especially covered in detail; used the book and an online website (sparknotes.com) and did pretty well; great analysis, author should be commended. If you are studying GCSE/O levels/A Levels/IGCSE courses/syllabuses, this definetly should be used as a textbook throughout your studies rather than just a reference book. deserves all the praise it can get

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Book in Bad Condition
Reviewed in the United States on 12 September 2012

The content of the book itself is fantastic and extremely helpful. It's small size makes it easy to carry around as opposed to the average large hardcover textbook. The only downside to this purchase is that I'm extremely disappointed with the condition the book arrived in. It's not in new condition at all. The cover is filthy and covered in black marks. The lamination on the cover is significantly pealing off on the right hand corner and all of the edges are dented. The book is falling apart.
