The social sciences focus upon people as individuals and as members of wider communities and networks, and look at all aspects of human relationships from the personal and intimate to the public and political. The book covers contemporary concerns with identities, citizenship, migration, diversity, new technologies, and the changing and often uncertain impact of globalization. The second edition has been extensively updated with new illustrations and examples, and additional discussion of the responses of the social sciences to the mobilities of contemporary life, such as migration, living in multiethnic and often rapidly changing communities, new forms of citizenship, the impact of the material world, the perception that we live in a more insecure and dangerous world and the role of the media in presenting ideas about the changes that might be taking place.

Kath Woodward is Professor of Sociology at the Open University. Recent publications include, Boxing, Masculinity and Identity (2007), Embodied Sporting Practices (2009)and Why Feminism Matters (2009). She chaired the Open University, level 1, Introduction to the Social Sciences and currently chairs This Sporting Planet, a level 1 course on sport and the social sciences. She works on gendered, racialised identities, at CRESC and on Sport Across Diasporas at the BBC World Service for the AHRC Diasporas, Migration, Identities programme.

I was recommended this as background reading before I started a social sciences module with the Open University (DD101), and I found it really helpful in giving a broad overview of what the different branches of social science aim to achieve, and important current topics and trends in them. The discussions on identity were particularly useful for the beginning of my course (as well as really interesting and relevant to the world we live in!), and Kath Woodward presents the information in a lively enough manner to keep it fresh and engaging throughout.

If you're thinking of starting out from scratch in any of the social sciences, I'd definitely recommend this book as a starting point - it certainly helped me to feel more prepared before I started.

If doing a degree in social sciences, then obviously the course material is more relevant, however, this book is an excellent primer and valuable asset for anyone doing a degree as well as being both useful and interesting for inhabitants of our planet wanting to get an understanding of how society came to be and is managed.
Its very well written and easy to understand.

I bought this book as it was reccomended for the social sciences course held by the open university. it is an interesting book and the e-book is a lot cheaper than the paper version. However it was pointless apart from giving some impression about the course as if you join the course all information is in the course pack

The book has a lot of relevant content and it is very well structured. This book assisted me in understanding better some of the key issues and terms in Social Sciences.
