This book is full of adventures and cliff hangers. I knew I had a winner when my fifth grade students were upset when the lunch bell rang and we had to stop reading.

this one is PERFECT! I'd love to see it read in all ...

Read it with my 8 year old daughter and we couldn't put it down! Finished in two evenings! If you have a child who likes football and should know more about refugee experiences and/or Afghanistan, this one is PERFECT! I'd love to see it read in all our schools - what a different world we would live in. Written from the child's perspective with all the comical misunderstandings, excitement, hope and terror that would entail, this book is a fantastic dramatic story and a very effective education in one. Cannot recommend highly enough - we ordered this because we thought the author's Once was fantastic - I am browsing for more of Morris Gleitzman's books right now.

A great way to start discussing a tricky topic with children
Reviewed in Germany on 22 February 2016Verified Purchase
We really enjoyed this book. It opened up the door for my ten year old son to be able to ask lots of questions about the current refugee situation and its causes. He's hearing about these things anyway from his friends and I really wanted to make sure he was well informed and not just hearing negative gossip. This is just what I needed. Well written because it is aimed at children.

A gripping and topical tale
Reviewed in Germany on 16 May 2016Verified Purchase
This is a gripping and well-written story of a young brother and sister fleeing their native country of Afghanistan, in the hope of reaching Australia. Jamal and Bibi become separated from their parents, and have to live by their wits to survive the journey. Although tackling a serious topic, there is warmth and humour in the story, which makes it an excellent book for children up about 9 upwards.
My only question mark was that Jamal seemed a little too good to be true at times, but this contrasted well with his very prickly and difficult little sister! For children who enjoy this, I would also recommend 'Close to the Wind' by Jon Walter, which is similar in theme.
