This book is worth four times what I paid here. Excellent exhaustive research and sumptuous illustrations. Only one caveat: it aggravated my tennis elbow [it's heavy!]

Purchase options and add-ons
With a freshness and breadth of approach that sets Italian Renaissance art in its context, this book explores why works were created and who commissioned the palaces, cathedrals, paintings and sculptures. It covers Rome, Florence, Venice and the Veneto, Assisi, Siena, Milan, Pavia, Genoa, Padua, Mantua, Verona, Ferrara, Urbino and Naples. Chapters are grouped into four chronological parts, allowing for sustained examination of individual cities in different periods. 'Contemporary Scene' boxes provide fascinating glimpses of daily life and 'Contemporary Voice' boxes quote from painters and writers of the time. Accessible and beautifully presented with over 700 mostly colour images, this book is a definitive work on a key period of western art and culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful pictures with detailed accounts of the art technicals and culture background
Verified PurchaseI didn't read it very carefully yet, but flip through the pages, I am immediately captured by the beautiful pictures of those Renaisance masterpieces.
I am always interested in the historical period from 13rd to 16th century in Italy, this book can guide me through this period with all its beauty and splendor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Informatiive
Verified PurchaseI had to purchase this book for an Italian Renaissance Art class, and initially I did not want to do this as it was only a general education class and had nothing to do with my major.
Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. This book offers plenty of historical context to the art pieces including the why patrons commissioned certain types of art, why artists were motivated to create specific works and what the benefits (and drawbacks) were for them. I am not very good at history and have never studied art in my life but this book was absolutely fantastic. There are full-color reproductions of many famous works of art (if it's in Italy and you can think of it, it is in this book) and many lesser-known ones.
As far as textbooks go, and while I wish that in general they were cheaper, I think this one is a relatively fair price. It hurt to shell out $80 or so for this when I bought it, but I have to say I won't be reselling it. It has definitely been a book to pop open when I'm in the mood.
Everything from the photos to the commentary in this book is interesting and it was truly a pleasure to read. There is SO much context provided and if you ever want an overview of what we generally think of as the "Renaissance," and the art that was produced during that time, this is the book to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff
Verified PurchaseI really enjoyed reading this.
It is well written and costs a fraction of the price that my University's Blackwell's book shop was trying to charge for it.
Arrived fairly promptly and in good condition.
Definitely recommend for those wanting to learn about Italian Renaissance art.
