Fab . Really well put together and integrated info on Tricks Tips and systems to master your mind . Except this has been constructed over about 60 years of scientific (psychological) examinations of how faulty thinking (either indoctrinated or mis-acquired or genetic ) can come to dominate our behaviours and reactions in living . Sprinkled with cleaver examples to insight faulty thinking and how subjects are then able to examine, understand and take Actions to correct exaggerated or repetitive faulty thinking or behaviours that lead to dead ends .
The Author doesn't waffle and doesn't try to boost the reader as self help books often do . The ideas and systems speak for itself . Its the shear logicalness of this work (without being intellectual or psycobabbling) , that makes it utterly convincing and practical in that solutions are systematic in approach . The writing style is cool without being cold and definitions and knowledge are spliced into the text , so their is a lot of information , that seems obvious but requires contemplation .
Last ch12 is on Mindfulness and for all the wow I heard and read about this technique , its really simple pretty primitive compared to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) . I sampled a few other works of an introductory nature . Highly recommended for someone who's not in crisis and can't think (you'll need to get help) , But who knows their mind and the way you think is screwing up your life but can't work out why and how to go about changing faulty thinking habits.
I found a second edition in print (textbook style) and bought the 3rd edition on Kindle . I prefer kindle as text is not so spread out (my eyesights ok ) , for me its easier to digest paragraphs etc .
Buddhism on steroids . Highly recommended !!

This has to be one of the best self-help books for anxiety I have found. I love that it's so easy to read/follow and the case study examples provided give enough variety to explain each concept/strategy well. Very easy to relate to. It's full of SO many useful tips and strategies for anxiety, anger, frustration etc. This book is such a great tool to have on hand, in place of a therapist. I flick back over sections from time to time as well. I found it so useful, I bought two copies and advocate for it among friends and colleagues. Great buy!

When I read a book I take some notes. This is what I took away from 'Change your thinking':

Learn how to analyse thinking around critical incidents by using the following framework:

What are the facts, the situation or circumstances?
What is my subjective perception of the event/incident?
What evidence supports my subjective perception?
What evidence contradicts my subjective perception?
Am I making any thinking errors in my interpretation?
How else can I perceive the situation?

Thinking or interpretive errors:

Shoulds - normative values
Black & white thinking (dichotomies] - grey, more complex
Personalising - don’t focus on individual, the personal side
Mind reading - ascribing motives etc
Filtering - judging by narrowing the criteria
Predicting catastrophes - visualising worst case scenarios
Comparing - there will always be greater, status envy etc
Awfulising - making it more horrible than necessary
Blaming - scapegoating
Over-generalising - extending to too many cases
Labelling - simple categorisation
Jumping to conclusions - invalid jumps in logical process
Just world fallacy - no reason why the world should be fair or just
Hindsight vision - easy looking back

Success definition: ‘You’ve done your personal best at this stage, given your genes, past experiences and present situation’ [B. Montgomery - The truth about success and motivation]

Reasons for non-accomplishment

Unrealistic expectations
Lack of focus
Low frustration tolerance
Giving way to distractions
Lower priority tasks
Low energy
Anxiety
Depressed mood
Other people
Other….

Mindfulness: Observe with curiosity

Body sensations [clothes, contacts with skins, posture, internal tension etc
Mood [+, -, neutral]
Emotions [sad, happy, angry, excited etc]
Issues at back of mind
Transient thoughts

Cognitive based therapy

Prefrontal cortex: responsible for thinking, judging, reasoning, evaluation, decision-making, planning and organising - the ‘executive’ part of the brain

Limbic system: functions as the brain’s emotional centre - more primitive part of the brain that, among other things, controls biological drives and responses. One of its structures, the amygdala, plays an important part in emotion and motivation, particularly those related to survival.

The thalamus: a structure for the gateway of information coming from our senses and it usually directs or relays impulses generated by our sensory neurones to appropriate areas of the the prefrontal cortex.

In situations of high threat or emotional charge, the limbic system sends the information directly to the amygdala which creates a state of alarm: during this state the prefrontal cortex is overridden and we often fail to think logically or use sound judgment. At this time we may say or do things that we will later regret. There is a downside to uncontrolled anger, for instance.

This book gave me great insight and understanding into how I could challenge my unhealthy thought patterns. I helped me understand how my thinking is directly linked to my behaviour and my insecurities. One of the greatest things I took away was I could not change or control other peoples behaviour, however, I could control my own and in doing so the entire situation would change anyway. A great book!!! Lifechanging!!!

Not the sort of content the general reading public would rush to read! However for any individual struggling with Anxiety, Depression, OCD,Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder it is well worth reading. It is a readable, easily understood introduction to the patterns of thinking that are usually the basis of problems. For anyone contemplating or beginning Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I would thoroughly recommend it .

I think this is a fabulous book on CBT and gives great insight and lots of detail. For me the content was amazing and gave me a greater insight into CBT. However for those new to CBT many would struggle with amount of information as there is so much (wonderful) information to take in and process. I was one of those people and as such it took me a year to read and re-read, yet the persistence was worth it and it is a real game changer!
