This catalogue for an exhibit at Chicago's Oriental Institute Museum presents the newest research on the Predynastic and Early Dynastic Periods in a lavishly illustrated format. Essays on the rise of the state, contact with the Levant and Nubia, crafts, writing, iconography and evidence from Abydos, Tell el-Farkha, Hierakonpolis and the Delta were contributed by leading scholars in the field. The catalogue features 129 Predynastic and Early Dynastic objects, most from the Oriental Institute's collection, that illustrate the environmental setting, Predynastic and Early Dynastic culture, religion and the royal burials at Abydos. This volume will be a standard reference and a staple for classroom use.

Présentation d'une magnifique collection d'objets prédynastiques.
Reviewed in France on 2 June 2017Verified Purchase

Richly illustrated and wide-ranging
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2013Verified Purchase
I originally obtained this text as a free downloadable PDF from the Oriental Institute's website. As such, I could read it on an iPad and always have it with me for study. However, such as the quality of the text and illustrations that I then bought the printed version for 'proper' reading.
This is a large format book, which was originally put together to accompany an exhibition. The articles cover a wide historical span, with appropriate detail for anyone studying the early history of Egypt as opposed to reading solely for general interest. Several of the contributors are international internationally recognised scholars. Examples: Tomb U-j By Günter Dreyer; The Invention of Writing in Egypt By David Wengrow. This is an absolutely superb volume, which concludes with excellent photographs of items from the original exhibition.

Informative, authoritative and fun!

Great read on a critical period that is coming to light through the painstaking and brilliant work of a diverse group of scientists, technicians, linguists, historians and laborers. Amazing what can be gleaned from sometimes meager physical evidence.
