A few young women are caught out in the woods at night, dancing and calling down curses, by the pastor of all people. One of them is his daughter and all he cares about is making her appear innocent to protect himself! Most people would put the whole episode down to young women throwing off their everyday mien and having some fun. Unfortunately, these girls belong to a Puritan sect in Salem Massachusetts and from this, mostly, innocent frolic, comes the infamous Salem Witch Trials!
Amazingly, it is not the girls who are of accused of witchcraft but other, innocent, men and women in the community. To add to the farce it is the girls who accuse these people.
Arthur Miller does a brilliant job of exposing each of the character’s strengths and weaknesses. He shows how impotent a person is when trying to prove a negative!
This copy contains notes for students that are far more detailed than anything in the school student version. I’d recommend getting this book for any student studying this for school.
