Written for physical therapists, massage therapists and occupational therapists, "Outcome-Based Massage" is the first text to introduce soft tissue massage techniques with functional outcomes in mind. By establishing a critical thinking process for incorporating massage into therapeutic practice, students and clinicians from a variety of health care professions can benefit from this valuable guide. This unique text instructs readers how to: identify impairments through the client examination; select and apply massage techniques for treating impairments and achieving functional outcomes; integrate massage techniques with other treatment techniques; and, plan for the discharge of the client. Its outstanding features further guide readers: demonstrates how to use techniques in practice with superb photographic illustrations, boxes, charts, figures, and clinical examples; presents practice sequences that lead readers through the application of each technique; provides 23 categories of impairment-level outcomes of care for orthopedic, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, psychoneuroimmunologic, and central nervous system conditions that can be achieved using massage techniques; incorporates current models of disablement, critical thinking methods, and evaluation techniques into a single problem-solving approach that is consistent with the APTA's "Guide to Physical Therapist Practice"; and, discusses the interpersonal aspects of massage in clinical care.

A Wonderful Massage Therapy Resource
Reviewed in the United States on 18 January 2010Verified Purchase
I am a somewhat new massage therapist and have had my own office for almost a year.
I bought this book when I opened my office because I felt like I needed a refresher on charting and how to chart for injury treatment, structural work, insurance, etc. Even in school I wasn't strong with charting, so I was really looking for something to give me more confidence with it.
I ordered this book because of it's title and I sure wasn't disappointed! I'm really pleased with this book and I feel it's helped me with more than charting.
This book is organized into two sections - Client Exam and Treatment Plan / Treatment and Discharge.
The first part of the book covers a little of the philosophy of caring for a client, and then goes into clinical decision making and testing.
The second part of the book covers all kinds of ways to treat clients - it goes into detail on superficial reflex techniques, superficial fluid techniques, NMT, connective tissue techniques, passive movement techniques, and percussive techniques - all with many pictures for reference. This section also covers self massage, preparing your space for massage and then the actual treatments and discharge process.
I think maybe some seasoned massage therapists may find this book a tad elementary, but even just to get it as a great massage read rather than a reference, I think many people would still learn something.
Overall, this is a wonderful reference and helped me a lot with SOAP charting and treatment plans!

Bought this book mid-semester

Very helpful perspectives to consider. The author is careful to note bias in certain things and complete importance with other things that are absolute. I bought this after being convinced of its importance mid-semester. Great material!
