About the author

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Toward the end of his life, his work turned toward deeply personal, metaphysical questions concerning the nature of God. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film; notably: Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly. The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and in 2007 the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

- Reviewed in Australia on 28 December 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA classic science fiction tome. Should provide the reader the opportunity for personal reflection of the potential futures available to the human race.
- Reviewed in Australia on 1 January 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have to state that I came to this book via 'Bladerunner' (even though I am a SciFi enthusiast) and it certainly was an interesting read. As stated in the Introduction, the book is more about character development rather than visuals but certainly the storyline is also considerably different to the movie so that was a new and 'fresh' look at the story.
It is worth reading as it does create a bit more background but don't get disappointed if you have seen the movie first....its not the book of the movie but the movie is a changed adaptation of the book and if you read it in that context then you should enjoy it...
Recommended even if you are a fan of the movie
- Reviewed in Australia on 1 July 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA masterfully fulfilling science fiction classic novel. Contemplative and though-provoking, Phillip K. Dick's work is prophetic, questioning the nature of what it is to be human. Thoroughly enjoyable, yet eerie, with memorable characters - Deckard is an immensely human character who struggles with making sense of life amidst a decaying world. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in Australia on 3 September 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBlade Runner didn't make much of an impression on me, perhaps because I saw it more than 3 decades after it was made and had seen and read many stories that carried over the same point. Blade Runner 2049, however, was something I enjoyed.
It seemed only fitting that I read the book. Dick tells an elaborate story to ask us to consider what is "real" in his novel. In stead of making the protagonist question his senses (as is seen in so many contemporary stories), he asks a deeper question about how we value what is clearly a replica of something authentic when it still has the ability to evoke the same feelings.
Dick explores this topic thoroughly with references throughout of replicas in every aspect of his characters' lives from emotions and personal responsibility to sex.
Unfortunately, while Dick has an excellent imagination and raises some fascinating questions about reality, his writing style often makes it difficult to follow without rereading and occasional inference to determine why a situation may have changed in a couple of scenes.
- Reviewed in Australia on 20 June 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMany people have seen the movie, "Blade Runner". This Philip K Dick book was the inspiration for the movie. It's a fascinating read.
- Reviewed in Australia on 23 February 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just loved it, shows more than the movie. I think the movie steers away from the extinction of animals after WWT. You can really see how good this author was . Things in the novel have actually become catch phrases and are direct quotes from book. "Do you like our Owl?" "It's artifical?' Fantastic for those hungry for more of the Rick Deckard story.
- Reviewed in Australia on 28 January 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA thought provoking and engaging story extremely far ahead of its time. A quality read and a new favourite author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una obra genial e inquietante

5.0 out of 5 stars magnífico
Verified PurchasePhilip K, Dick escrevia deliciosamente bem. Passam as décadas, porém não fica desatualizado. Seu olhar e imaginação são sempre surpreendentes. A tradução é muito boa.
