Renowned moral philosopher Jonathan Glover confronts the brutal history of the twentieth century to unravel the mystery of why so many atrocities occurred. In a new preface, Glover brings the book through the post-September 11 era and into our own time--and asks whether humankind can "weaken the grip war has on us."

Praise for the first edition:

"It is hard to imagine a more important book. Glover makes an overwhelming case for the need to understand our own inhumanity, and reduce or eliminate the ways in which it can express itself--and he then begins the task himself. Humanity isan extraordinary achievement."--Peter Singer, Princeton University

"This is an extraordinary book: brilliant, haunting and uniquely important. Almost 40 years ago a president read a best seller and avoided a holocaust. I like to think that some of the leaders and followers of tomorrow will read Humanity."--Steven Pinker, New York Times Book Review

The details in this book are gripping. They put the reader in the very place being described with some type of accuracy. It covers the changes in warfare, the newness of the bombing, and is a good read for anyone interested or teaching history, to gain an improved understanding.

No politician should be allowed anywhere near the parliament unless he or she had read this book. Nobody should vote for a candidate who has not read this book. As Peter Singer says this is an extraordinary book. The manner in which even highly educated societies treat their enemies and friends is shocking to say the least. Jonathan Glover makes us realise that we have no right to say that we have been harmed and behave us if we are innocent when the atrocities committed in our name are hidden from us by our own governments and media.

As advertised. Arrived in a timely fashion. This is not casual reading. It covers hard, horrible topics. Some of the author's philosophical bent shows through, but I don't know how it couldn't when covering topics like this. I would recommend it to anyone that has even a modicum of introspection. And to EVERYONE who doesn't.

I had to pick this up for my PHL 230 class. I am currently on chapter 18. Glover presents historical information accurately, in addition to being very thorough. I'll provide a complete review when I complete the work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely important book

Brilliant. I'm not sure I've read a more worthwhile book in a long time. Glover analyses the terrible events of the twentieth century in a humane yet analytical manner. There is no trace of the ethical triumphalism of many historians of today. Glover shows how it's within us all to go wrong. So badly wrong.
