'Globalization' has become one of the defining buzzwords of our time - a term that describes a variety of accelerating economic, political, cultural, ideological, and environmental processes that are rapidly altering our experience of the world. It is by its nature a dynamic topic - and this Very Short Introduction has been fully updated for a third edition, to include recent developments in global politics, the global economy, and environmental issues. Presenting globalization in accessible language as a multifaceted process encompassing global, regional, and local aspects of social life, Manfred B. Steger looks at its causes and effects, examines whether it is a new phenomenon, and explores the question of whether, ultimately, globalization is a good or a bad thing. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liest sich gut, verschafft einen schnellen Überblick

5.0 out of 5 stars A good intro and, as the title says, it is "brief"

If someone looking to buy a book on globalization is angling for detail, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a brief supplement to a text or other source on the subject, or if you simply want an introduction that makes a little sense of what globalization is, a peek into the historical, political and economic dimensions of the subject, I really don't think you can go wrong with this short reference. Steger does an excellent job breaking down the essential elements and turning it into a more substantive discussion (albeit very brief) that helps one get past the morass of rhetoric so often heard when the term "globalization" is tossed around.

Serghiou Const
5.0 out of 5 stars Concise but rigorous
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2014
Verified Purchase
The book is concise by definition but rigorous in its treatment. The book provides a descriptive and explanatory account of the various dimensions of globalization but also a critical approach to certain forms of globalization and particularly the nature and effects of what the author calls 'market globalism' which currently prevails. The author identifies the two most daunting tasks facing us in the 21st century: the reduction of global disparities in wealth and well being and the preservation of our endangered planet. The brunt of the author's critique is not directed at globalization per SE, but at particular manifestations and tendencies that the author considers as falling short of the noble vision of a more equitable and sustainable global order.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction!

I think it is a good way to understand terminology related to Globalization.
The vocabulary used is easy to interpret with the context.
Good changes and incorporations in this edition (I've read the previous one).
