I really enjoyed this book since it met my expectations in a history book: it is rigorous, but at the same time brief, concise and fluid. The history of China, in particular the ancient period is full of magic. We all have plenty of images from movies or theatre based on it, but reality is even more vivid. From now on, I have another nice mixture of China in my mind thanks to this book.

Here is a fascinating compact history of Chinese political, economic, and cultural life, ranging from the origins of civilization in China to the beginning of the 21st century. Historian Paul Ropp combines vivid story-telling with astute analysis to shed light on some of the larger questions of Chinese history. What is distinctive about China in comparison with other civilizations? What have been the major changes and continuities in Chinese life over the past four millennia? Offering a global perspective, the book shows how China's nomadic neighbors to the north and west influenced much of the political, military, and even cultural history of China. Ropp also examines Sino-Indian relations, highlighting the impact of the thriving trade between India and China as well as the profound effect of Indian Buddhism on Chinese life. Finally, the author discusses the humiliation of China at the hands of Western powers and Japan, explaining how these recent events have shaped China's quest for wealth, power and respect today, and have colored China's perception of its own place in world history.

4.0 out of 5 stars China in History - Nicely Told
Verified PurchaseMost of us living in North America have very little knowledge of China, its history, culture and politics. After a short but extremely interesting trip to Beijing I wanted to gain more understanding of China by learning about some of the background to what I had seen. This very fine book did a wonderful job at doing that. Basic Chinese history and culture was clearly presented and the ideas easy to follow. With China appearing so prominently in world economics and politics these days, the final chapter on the late period beginning in 1949 was extremely helpful. I certainly do recommend this book to anyone wanting a brief introduction to China and its people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily Digestable History.
Verified PurchaseThis is exactly what I was looking for! It is brief--only 155 pages of text-- and not as detailed as most histories; but it includes all of the important ingredients that have come together from prehistoric times to the present to make China and its people as they are today. The back pages include a Chronology, Chapter Notes, For Further Reading, Websites, and Index. I plan to look for more of The New Oxford World History books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used book in excellent condition. Very good concise history.
Verified PurchaseI would like to highly recommend the seller of this used book. I chose it from the list because it said it was like new, and it was. Many times it is not the case with other sellers, despite the description. The content itself is very informative. I had it in Audible and I had to have a hard copy as well as it is a great one for my library collection of favorite world history books.
