I am a teacher and researcher at the University of California, Berkeley.
I grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, went to college in Abilene, Texas, and got a PhD from Ohio State University. I had post-doctoral fellowships at Indiana University and UCLA, and had a research job in the Department of Biocommunication at the University of Alabama, Birmingham before joining the faculty at Ohio State. In 2005 I moved to Berkeley.
My books are mainly textbooks for Linguistics courses, but I've also edited two books of research articles on timely topics in Linguistics.

1975年に初版が出て、第三版は日本語訳もされている音声学の入門書の最新(第五)版。構成は最初に調音音声学、音韻論と音声表記を簡単に紹介したあと、英語の音声について説明している。その後に、一般音声学のさまざまなトピックを扱い英語以外の言語の音声についても触れている。よく考えられていると思うのは、一般音声学の母音の説明の前に音響音声学の説明をしていることで、母音のフォルマントによる音質の違いの説明が無理なく分かるようになっている。
入門書ということもあり、内容は過度に専門的になることなく、英語およびその他の言語の音声を理解するための枠組みを分かりやすく提示している。もちろん、これまでに改定を重ねてきており内容が確かであること、カバーする範囲が適切で漏れがないことも間違いない。英語の文章も専門用語は出てくるが(それもきちんと説明されている)、平明である。なお、付属のCD-ROMには、本文中のほとんどの表にある音に加えて、世界のさまざまな言語の音声、分析用のソフトまで含まれていて、至れり尽くせりという感じだ。
このような分かりやすい、しかし厳密な入門書があることは音声学という分野のレベルの高さを示しているもので、発音について学習しよう(あるいは、もっと端的に外国語の発音を良くしよう)と思っている者にとって大きなプラスである。
残念ながら評者の見るところ、外国語の発音習得に関しては、無知に基づくデタラメな方法論が横行しているようだ。これらは現実を無視し、また方法論的に穴だらけの驚天動地の「理論」を持ち出して、学習者の役にたたないどころか害を及ぼしている。
本書のような優れた入門書(他にもいくつかあるが)を読んでおくことは、このようなデタラメを見分けることにも役にたつのである。

Buch kam nach weniger als einer Woche bei mir an (von D nach Ö) und war in guter Qualität, d.h. man sah, dass es eine ältere Version war, es war jedoch nirgends etwas hineingeschrieben oder ausgefüllt. Bis auf kaum sichtbare Gebrauchsspuren am Cover und Buchrücken wirkt es neuwertig.

Phonetics is a notoriously technical discipline, and most books on the subject will make the beginner's head spin. Ladefoged's "A Course in Phonetics" is not one of those books. I believe this is the best introductory book to phonetics available. It's easy to read and he doesn't overload the reader with lots of technical terms. He uses simple plain English to describe phenomena that takes other writers half a dictionary to describe. The concepts aren't watered down, so this is the perfect introduction to phonetics. If you're doing serious research into phonetics and you've already taken a course in phonetics, this may be a little basic for you, but I can recommend it to everyone else.

I bought a different textbook for my Phonetics and Phonology module, but found that it lacked a lot of things, and on the other hand, included too much scientifical, hard-to-understand, unnecessary material.
A Course In Phonetics, however, is both as simple and scientific as it needs to be - whether you're just starting out or need something to refer back to, I think this is the best Phonetics textbook money can buy.
