Dear Readers
Excellent textbook for review and study of what has happened, what has been happening and what might very well happen
with China and its many relationships with the key players in not just Asia but globally as well.
Sutter carefully and accurately tracks China's political and miltiary movements over several decades right up until 2011.
Also a very adequate treatment of the evolution of cross-strait developments.
As well his bibliography and footnotes are an incredible resevoir of high quality research that all students can benefit
by follow-up research.
I'll be looking forward to what Sutter has to say about the Bo Xi-Lai case.
Also check out chapter seven, "Relations with Taiwan", see what Sutter says about the present support the U.S. Congress has for Taiwan.......................
Best Regards
sjw

This comprehensive introduction to Chinese foreign relations examines the opportunities and limits China faces as it seeks growing international influence. Tracing the record of twists and turns in Chinese foreign relations since the end of the Cold War, Robert G. Sutter provides a nuanced analysis that shows that despite its growing power, Beijing is hampered by both domestic and international constraints. Newly revised, this edition features more extensive treatment of China's role in the international economy and greater discussion of its relations with the developing world. Overall, Sutter's balanced and thorough assessment shows China's leaders exerting more influence in world affairs but remaining far from dominant. Facing numerous contradictions and trade-offs, they move cautiously as they deal with a complex global environment.

Review
China's increasingly assertive behavior during the recent global financial meltdown has raised a critically important question: Will the pragmatic accommodation and moderation that has characterized Chinese foreign policy for several decades be discontinued after China's rise as a great power in the twenty-first century? Robert Sutter's book is a remarkable tour de force in its analysis of Chinese foreign policy in recent decades and provides an informed guide for readers to understand the uncertain future of China's international relations in the years to come. -- Suisheng Zhao, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, and Editor of Journal of Contemporary China Robert Sutter's Chinese Foreign Relations offers a penetrating, balanced, and insightful analysis of the motivations behind Beijing's post-Cold War grand strategy and the measures taken to advance it. It is simply the best book published in recent years on this important subject and should be required reading for everyone interested in trying to understand China's future role in international affairs. -- Minxin Pei, Claremont McKenna College This book is an ideal reference for anyone who shares a deep interest in China studies, especially in the evolution and trends in Chinese foreign policy. Sutter surveys the major streams of thought on different facets of Chinese foreign policy, showing the wide gamut of perspectives on this interesting subject. Students, researchers, professors, and longtime China watchers will find great value in reading this scholarly work. Asian Politics & Policy

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well written
Verified PurchaseRobert G. Sutter's book on Chinese foreign relations is an excellent book on the topic of Chinese foreign relations as the author provides both a historic and modern retelling of what has shaped Chinese foreign policy since 1949. It is very comprehensive as it covers everything from Latin America to the Middle East and New Zealand but it is not bogged down by unnecessary details. It's also well written though some might find it a bit dry. Invaluable to those who are doing research on the topic.
