About the Author

Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Dr. Freedman came to UCSB in 1981 after three years of teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.


At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.


 


IN MEMORIAM: HUGH YOUNG (1930—2013)

Hugh D. Young was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics,  Dr. Young earned a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Carnegie Mellon in 1972 and spent several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh.

    This is the best textbook on ANY subject I have EVER read. I just cannot put it down. To put this statement into context I have a BE in Electronics and an MBA so I have read quite a few textbooks. Also I am an avid reader.

    This book is exceptionally well laid out. It assumes almost nothing and has very detailed and easy to read explanations of some fairly significant topics. Typically when i was studying I would read several books to get a different perspective on what they were trying to say as there was always something I didn't quite understand in a single book.

    IMHO - If you need to understand Physics this is the only book you will need

    In terms of the content and readability, I would give this textbook on physics 5 stars. However, (and note I have only been studying from this book for the past 3 or 4 months) there seems to be some errors in the answers given, particularly, the rounding or level of accuracy in the answers often disagrees with what I get, even though I applied what was taught in the book as far as significant figures are concerned.

    Also, some things are not explained at all, and the reader is left to search elsewhere to understand how to do some problems. For example, there is a question where we are given the uncertainty (in terms of a number plus or minus another number) of two terms, then we calculate a product or ratio of those terms and are asked to give the average plus the uncertainty in the result. How to do this is not explained anywhere in the test. Also, the number of significant figures given in the answer is one less than what the author himself taught us to do.

    So whilst the book's content and readability is great, it seems (to me at least) to be let down by subtle yet important inaccuracies that make the experience for me a bit of a mixed bag at times.

    Edit - an update: it seems from what I have read that often questions are changed slightly (usually numerically) but sometimes the answers given at the back correspond to an earlier edition numbers. This is huge time waster! Meaning I spend many more hours racking my brain trying to figure out where I have gone wrong only to finally realise that my answers are right but the book's answer corresponds to a different question, as mentioned, with slightly altered numerics. Is fine if you are super confident with the work, but usually we are reading to understand something, and require the feedback from the answer to see if we are on the right track or not. Have to say, this book is poor in that they didn't bother to proof read and check that the answers are right before publishing them.

    Filled with errors. I think this is why the global version is way cheaper than the other versions. This should not be sold because if you are learning new concepts (in my case independently) and it is wrong to begin with, you will make mistakes the entire time. I have had to watch videos on khan academy to clear up the mess this book caused. I am disappointed.

    This textbook was incredibly helpful and life-saving in the two semester physics sequence. It is well-written and I enjoyed reading it just for fun.

    The book has been Pearsonized in the sense that there are millions of problems in it that you will probably never do. However, this allows instructors to pick problems that match their pedagogy and allows students to have plenty of other practice problems. Also, the MasteringPhysics problems seemed to be easier than the textbook problems.

    My first course in Mechanics was much easier than the second semester. The problems in the Electricity/Magnetism section can be very, very hard even if you are completely prepared. Sadistic professors may assign these problems without covering the necessary material in class. So make sure you have a kind and effective professor!

    With that said, this book is entirely appropriate for self-study and for traditional courses. But be careful when you sign up for the second semester. Freshman math classes (college algebra through calculus III) can easily be covered in a short period of time by anyone who is mathematically sophisticated. It is not necessarily the same for natural sciences, and I learned this the hard way in Physics II by taking it in a 5-week summer session. Unless you are entirely confident, over-prepared, and already experienced with electronics in some way, please take my advice and complete this course in the long semester. The alternative is very stressful.

    The writing is clear, and the typesetting is beautiful. You will want to keep it on your shelf if you intend to go further with physics.
