Authoritative and thorough, "Life" achieves an optimal balance of scholarship and teachability. The first introductory text to present biological concepts through the research that revealed them, "Life" covers the full range of topics with an integrated experimental focus flowing naturally from the narrative. This approach enables students to experience biology as a rich and coherent discipline. The new edition includes the latest research, new pedagogy, and new chapter-opening spreads that draw students into the chapter in an engaging way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Biology Textbook Publication in a very long time!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 20 June 1999

I have reviewed Campbell, Curtis& Barnes, and other fine textbooks in biology, as a teacher and a scientist, I find Purves, etal; Life , A Science of Biology as the best textbook on the market. His clear explanation of the concepts with bright, colorful pictures have helped my students to understand biological concepts for the AP Bio exam as well as preparing them for college. The questions after each and every chapter plainly incorporate the chapter's lessons as well as inclusion of the continuity of life that is important in all biology teaching. His book had already included the new domain designations and included the reasons as why they were being changed. ( As this was the infamous #3 question on the AP Bio exam.) As a trained molecular biologist, I am finally satisfied in the explanation of the molecular process of life. Again his use of good solid pictures help to re-enforce a difficult concept. I also know that MIT uses this book as well as Harvard, I urge every biology teacher professor to at least have this in their personal library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great stimulating book, but a bit chunky to carry
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2009

This is a solid book. The fact that every lecture (in Durham) recommended this book, as a core book (i.e essential) is a testiment to the reputation. The good thing about this book is its vast breadth, it coveres all the basics aspects of Biology.
It is colourful, the content is easy to read and there are lots of pictures to stimulate the mind. There are also interesting case studies for students to apply the knowledge to the real world.

Just two faults really, nothing is perfect of course. The book is a little chunky. The publishers have tried their hardest to rectify this by using particularly fine paper, there is of course also the portable book version where the main text is divided into many smaller books, which I did not purchase. As a contradiction, they also simplified some of the aspects, otherwise the book can easily go over the 2000 word mark. Of course, this means that some aspects of the material lack depth, but it also allows easy transition between A level and undergraduate studies, and a great companion guide to lecture notes. Essentially, a excellent foundation book for 1st year lectures, if not a little heavy, but good fo revision, and reference.

    JL (stay classy)
