It is an excellent book shows you how to do programming in procedural and object oriented programming. It lists all the necessary steps and walks you along the way of thinking from abstraction to realization, how to read and analyze the problem description, get all requirements, form the functions, logic and data flow, structure a program in procedural and also object oriented design and program, and test driver. Author's pseudo code style is closed to Java syntax, easy to convert to any languages. Great book, even for professional software engineers to review and reference. Fourth edition has a detailed description on steps of OOD in is-a, has-a and association for the relationships of UML diagrams with the complete pseudo code list corresponding in chapter 11 and 12, which is worth for the price for less than five dollars (used or new book) and is much better / readable than the Fifth edition that replaces these two chapters with a simplified 3 chapters of less information, and expensive.

The techniques presented in this book are very elementary. It would only be of value to those who are just starting out in programming. The reader of this book can hope to learn about writing pseudo-code and desk checking, both of which any second year undergraduate will alreay have been exposed to. If anything, this book serves as a reminder of the importance of practising these techniques. Other than that, it offers no real value.
