This book majors mainly on the disgraceful relationship between; Eurotunnel the client, and TML the contractors. What a sad indictment of private industry, particularly in Britain. The book ends prior to the tunnel opening, I would have liked this included plus also the outcome of the legal situation as regards payments. This just goes to show that private industry is at least as bad as government in getting things done on time and on budget. The various battles between the two parties are gone into in detail and make sad reading on a project that had the worlds eyes upon it. The story is told by two authors with a great understanding of the construction industry and is told well. There is a timeline given that keeps abreast with developments, and the text is accompanied with photo sections, a picture shows a class 20 at work in the tunnel, I enjoyed seeing that. One opponent of the tunnel was Jonathan Aitken, and considering what happened in his future, perhaps he had specific reasons why he did so. The two heads of Eurotunnel being honoured escaped me. Should not also the joint heads of TML have been treated the same? Britain as usual, the ones doing the work are ignored. One thing that does come across is the commitment to the whole infrastructure that France had and we didn't, and that they were stronger in their dealings with Eurotunnel. Britain as ever half hearted and more worried about the cost than the benefits. Also featured is the negativity, mostly from the British press, The Sun even staging a photo to enable them to lie about it. Although the project was fantastic and is very beneficial let us not forget that at least ten people died in it's construction, a very high price to pay for their families and friends. All in all an excellent book and worth reading on many levels. Highly recommended.

I wanted a book that told the story of the engineering challenges of the build. This book was about the political, financial, and social aspects of the project; not what I was after. It got boring after the fourth chapter of scintillating governmental monetary studies, committee votes and financial machinations. If economics and politics is what you're after, this is it. Choose something else for engineering insight.
