This book is absolutely brilliant. Before reading this, I was finding wading through ontology and epistemology a joyless task. This short, focused book successfully elucidated the usefulness and importance of understanding the foundations of research. It was genuinely engaging and turned Research Methods around for me.

Good for an academic writing piece within social sciences, and helps to get a deeper understanding of research methods and the philosophy needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite a tough read, but not finished yet

I'm struggling with this book a bit. I do have some research background allowing me to relate concepts to the real world. But I'm already starting to feel there's nowhere near enough examples to make this stick. Accepting that the research principles can apply across a spectrum of disciplines, it would still be useful to have more real-world examples. I frequently read something many times before making the connection with something I know quite well. If more practical examples had been given, I would have made the connection a lot quicker, and I believe someone new to research would get the gist of the language and methods a lot quicker.

I like the structure of this book though, and feel confident that I will use it time and time again.

I found this a super, clear, concise and readable book. The examples used were illuminating and the way the text was written was easy to understand. Definitely worth a read, particularly for MA or PhD students.
