About the Author
Hugh D. Young is Professor of Physics at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Carnegie-Mellon for both undergraduate and graduate study and earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie-Mellon in 1956, and has also spent two years as a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Professor Young's career has centered entirely on undergraduate education. He has written several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 became a co-author with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. With their deaths, he assumed full responsibility for new editions of these books until joined by Prof. Freedman for University Physics.
Professor Young is an enthusiastic skier, climber, and hiker. He also served for many years as Associate Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh, and has played numerous organ recitals in the Pittsburgh area. Professor Young and his wife, Alice, usually travel extensively in the summer, especially in Europe and in the desert canyon country of southern Utah.
Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Freedman was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles, and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. He came to UCSB in 1981 after three years teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.
At UCSB, Professor Freedman teaches in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has helped to develop computer-based tools for learning introductory physics and astronomy.
When not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Professor Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot's license) or driving with his wife, Caroline, in their 1955 Nash Metropolitan.
A. Lewis Ford is Professor of Physics at Texas A&M University. He received a B.A. from Rice University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. After a one-year postdoc at Harvard University, he joined the Texas A&M physics faculty in 1973 and has been there ever since. Professor Ford's research area is theoretical atomic physics, with a specialization in atomic collisions. At Texas A&M he has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, but primarily introductory physics.

Verified PurchaseThis series of textbooks on college freshman physics is simply the best I have found in print, even if it is not the most widely used. It has clear explanations of all concepts, plenty of instructive diagrams, and most of all many interesting solved problems and examples. I am by no means saying that this is an easy book, you will need to read it carefully and work through the examples. However, unlike with other physics textbooks, all of the information is there if you are willing to put forth the required time and effort. Make sure you've had the first two semesters of calculus first though, or there are parts of this book that will not make sense to you. If you are interested in having a good textbook and reference for both college physics and modern physics, it is the best choice you could make. If you are only interested in the classical physics part, I suggest you buy the 10th edition and save yourself a lot of money. The 10th edition has just a very abbreviated section on modern physics. This book is of great use for engineers, because not only will it get you through your freshman physics sequence smoothly, it is a great reference with lots of examples that you will need when you take statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and your sophomore level courses on electric circuits and EM. I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

This book is a wonderful way to find out and repair gaps in basic engineering knowledge. If your undertaking around 'H.N'D' plus type level 'engineering' this must be on your bookshelf. The book is about as clear on its topics at this level as I have seen.
From basics to useful introductory explanations of and substantial topics as 'Electromagnetism' and 'thermodynamics' and 'Nuclear Physics'. This is a wonderful of its level book. Yes the size of the book is overkill and makes it hard to hold for very long periods. This would really help any one with engineering type studies who say missed out on 'A'-level 'Physics'. Yes it is a lot of money but its clear and obviously a 'labour of love' by the authors.

Verified PurchaseThe delivery was impeccable, the item I received is exactly what was described. The book itself is very good because I have already glimpsed through the 13th version of this one. However this version is 10 times cheaper, that's what has been the main reason I chose this edition. If you have money, spend on the 13th as all images and illustrations are clearer. Definitely recommend this, be it edition 11th, 12th or 13th.

Verified PurchaseI had a Sears, Zemansky, and Young version before. I'm not thrilled with the new layout by the new editor. I think they are playing on the Sears and Zemansky name to see them, but that is not Amazon's fault. It is not at all like the Sears and Zemansky version (the one my Dad had in school in the 50's) or the version that I had in the late seventies.
