I wish I could give it 10 stars!
I read this through twice and then followed the program EXACTLY--even charting daily progress.
It was amazing. My son had been stuttering for 3 years (age 2 1/2 to 5 1/2). I felt an urgency to help him get smoother before Kindergarten started (for obvious reasons).
I think charting the progress was especially important, because I would look at the charts in utter amazement. It took about 3 months of daily therapy to bring his stuttering down to almost nothing.
For us, his "talking time" was done while he was coloring or working in little math workbooks. (Reading books or doing puzzles was too stressful because he was learning to read and anxious to follow along. The puzzles just made him feel like hurrying for some reason). I ordered snake coloring books and simple math workbooks. Both of which he found relaxing. When he spoke smoothly, I gave him a smarties candy. We'd go through a roll and a half each session--small price to pay for his miraculous recovery. I think the candy helped reinforce the smooth speech by making a pleasant connection between smooth talk and sweet taste.
Also important: make sure you will not be interrupted by others. The time needs to be relaxed and happy.
I recommend this book whole-heartedly. Read it carefully. Think about your own child. Make an individual, home-based plan for therapy. Go for it!
We just approached it like just another basic skill to learn for Kindergarten: learn to raise your hand before you speak, learn to cut with scissors, learn to write letters AND learn to speak smoothly so people can understand you. Simple, matter-of-fact.
I know the book is for clinicians, but since the therapy is designed to be home-based and parent implemented and the therapist's role is as a facilitator; I believe that ANY bright, motivated, thoughtful parent can make it work.
