It has a *constant* formatting problem which either smashes two or three words together or unnecessarily hyphenates words. Sure it's readable, but it's readable in the same way that you can use a messy public toilet. There is also no chapter selection which is extremely annoying for anything other than a casual read. The cover art is decent but judging from the shoddy formatting of the actual novel it's probably stolen anyway.
But yeah, the actual content is pretty alright. Do yourself a favour and skip this version though, your eyes will appreciate it.

'He was deaf to the murmurs of conscience, and resolved to satisfy his desires at any price.'The Monk (1796) is a sensational story of temptation and depravity, a masterpiece of Gothic fiction and the first horror novel in English literature. The respected monk Ambrosio, the Abbot of a Capuchin monastery in Madrid, is overwhelmed with desire for a young girl; once having abandoned his monastic vows he begins a terrible descent into immorality and violence. His appalling fall from grace embraces blasphemy, black magic, torture, rape, and murder, and places his very soul in jeopardy.Lewis's extraordinary tale drew on folklore, legendary ghost stories, and contemporary dread inspired by the terrors of the French Revolution. Its excesses shocked the reading public and it was condemned as obscene. The novel continues to beguile and shock readers today with its gruesome catalogue of iniquities, while at the same time giving a profound insight into the deep anxieties experienced by British citizens during one of the most turbulent periods in the nation's history.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Breaking bad in an 18th century Spanish monastery
Reviewed in the United States on 29 October 2023Verified Purchase
Matthew Gregory Lewis' The Monk is an 18th century gothic tale that must have been scandalous in its day. The main character is a monk who was raised from an infant by a monastery. He appears beyond reproach and is regarded as the holiest of holies. A young woman, captivated by the monk as well as dabbling in black magic, cross-dresses and pretend to be a novitiate in the monastery to be near the monk. She is eventually discovered which leads to an affair. At the same time, in an adjacent convent, a young woman who is there only because her mother promised becomes pregnant. The prioress attempts to hide all of this, allowing the newborn infant to die while starving the young mother. Meanwhile, the monk develops an obsession towards another woman and uses a compact with the devil to rape her. He also murders her mother to ensure secrecy. At this point, things really go south with the town erupting into mob violence tearing all the nuns limb from limb. When everything comes fully to light, while no one was expecting the Spanish Inquisition, they arrive in full force and only another deal with the devil secure transient relief, but here even the devil has his due.
Given the extent of murder, rape, incest, infanticide, poisoning, mob violence, assault, robbery, etc., even a current streaming miniseries would receive a jaundiced censors' eyes, but for the 18th century this must have caused quite a row.
