'We pretended we had each a large island inhabited by people 6 miles high.' In their collaborative early writings the Brontës created and peopled the most extraordinary fantasy worlds, whose geography and history they elaborated in numerous stories, poems, and plays. Together they invented characters based on heroes and writers such as Wellington, Napoleon, Scott, and Byron, whose feuds, alliances, and love affairs weave an intricate web of social and political intrigue in imaginary colonial lands in Africa and the Pacific Ocean. The writings of Glass Town, Angria, and Gondal are youthful experiments in imitation and parody, wild romance and realistic recording; they demonstrate the playful literary world that provided a 'myth kitty' for their early - and later - work. In this generous selection the writings of Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and Branwell are presented together for the first time. The Introduction explores the rich imaginative lives of the Brontës, and the tension between their maturing authorship and creative freedom. The edition also includes Charlotte Brontë's Roe Head Journal, and Emily and Anne's Diary Papers, important autobiographical sources. Me habría gustado que indicaran qué textos han descartado de la selección; pero en general la edición está bastante bien Y la introducción es muy exhaustiva.

Great, cohesive work of the Bronte siblings!

This book is fantastic - it lends a great overview of the Brontes early works as children - I appreciated that they included a great deal of Branwell's work, along with Emily and Anne's diary papers and Charlotte's "Roe Head Journals". I'm doing my undergraduate senior thesis on Branwell Bronte (I don't believe he gets enough attention as a writer, he wrote some amazing early stories and poetry), and this book has been a huge help in emulating his writing style and learning more about him as a person through his writing. I highly recommend this book for any enthusiast of the Brontes.

Early Bronte offerings

This book was bought as a gift, but the recipient would have preferred a more biographical book than this one, which contained stories and articles written by the Brontes in their earlier years, prior to the publication of their more famous works. However, that is very much a personal opinion - someone else might have found these articles, etc., of great interest.

Impressive writing!

Yes, I am a Bronte fan; that would not lessen the magic of these stories when you consider when they were written. I'm thoroughly enjoying these and seeing the crucible the stories to come later formed in!
