Product description

Review

"I cannot recommend this book too strongly. It is the best of its kind that I have seen [...] The style and language is always clear, beautifully presented, encouraging and inspirational even. This accompanying manual is an outstandingly useful and valuable teaching aid in its own right. It should prove an excellent basis for tutorial exercises or a self-help to the serious student of Organic Chemistry."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good OC workbook
Reviewed in Germany on 27 February 2013

This is not just a solutions manual to accompany a specific textbook, but a workbook that could also be used independently from Clayden's "Organic Chemistry": The questions / problems are printed ahead of the solutions, the textbook is not needed.

The problems are not too difficult, but not simplistic as well, furthermore they make you think in a real-world way, they are not just stupid mental gymnastics.

I use this (1st ed.) book with the 2nd edition of Clayden's "OC" and have not yet found any serious disparity of topics.

    Definitely recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books around

This is a very good book for both undergraduates and those looking to brush up on their general chemistry for interviews (like me), especially if you combine it with the main textbook from Clayden et al. It has been laid out in a logical way and is explained in a way which makes it easy to understand. I only wish it had been available when i was an undergraduate.Cant recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Book!
Reviewed in the United States on 14 October 2009

Wow! This is a great organic text! After taking undergraduate organic courses, I faced the graduate cume for organic chemistry, which I failed miserably. I bought this book after seeing many high reviews, and let me just say that they were right. This text is like a lecture in a book. It offers a less tradition order of presenting organic chemistry, but I have now begun to grasp this seemingly impossible subject with this 'new British method'. It explains everything. It doesn't leave something out for you to wonder about why it is the way it is. (However, because of this, the text is pretty lengthy.)

This book helps you to understand organic chemistry-- not memorizing reactions, but understanding the concepts behind the reactions (movement of electrons, electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, etc.) so that you can very accurately predict the product of a reaction that you have never seen and propose a very likely mechanism.

Another great thing about this text is that the problem sets at the end of every chapter are not 30 problems long. There are an average of, I would say, 8-10 problems at the end of each chapter, and with the solutions manual for this text, I think that anyone can learn, really learn organic chemistry.

The only flaw in this book is that there are some errors, which I am sure they have supplemented online, I just haven't looked, but this is to be expected for a first edition. Overall, highly recommended for undergraduates and graduate students alike!

Merci M. Warren.
