He shows how the 1920s witnessed renewed hope and a flourishing of modernist art and literature, but how the decade ended in economic collapse and gave rise to a second, more devastating world war and genocide on an unprecedented scale. Jarausch further explores how Western Europe surprisingly recovered due to American help and political integration. Finally, he examines how the Cold War pushed the divided continent to the brink of nuclear annihilation, and how the unforeseen triumph of liberal capitalism came to be threatened by Islamic fundamentalism, global economic crisis, and an uncertain future. Konrad H. Jarausch is the Lurcy Professor of European Civilization at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His many books include Reluctant Accomplice: A Wehrmacht Soldier's Letters from the Eastern Front (Princeton) and After Hitler: Recivilizing Germans, 1945-1995. He lives in Chapel Hill.

Jarausch's synthesis of twentieth century European history engrossed because of my interest in European history.
His thesis on the continental effect of "modernity" however is unconvincing. Nonetheless those who hope to
read a history of Europe in the last century will be satisfied with this book.

Very good book about a critical period in the world. While Konrad Jarausch writes in a manner that is entertaining, he rehashes many things, generally using the same words. However, the one thing that stands out is Jarausch’s penchant for having to use “modernity” ad nauseam. He pushes the concept too much. I was surprised that the title or subtitle didn’t have “modernity” it it.

This is a very long book that reviews the history of the 20th C from the point of view of modernity. The 20th C wasn't just a continuation of the 19th C Things fundamentally changed because the growth of modern institutions, technology, ways of doing business, and terrible modes of warfare, and ultimately methods and kinds of governance. It is well written and usually you will know the many of the facts the author brings to bear although sometimes you get a new knowledge or point of view. Maybe it deserves more stars but I just had trouble staying with it. I finally quit 4/5th of the way.
