I received a book that while admittedly in good condition has signs of light previous use. The corners of the hardcover were slightly bent in (more so on the bottom also, as if it had been in a backpack), and some pages show light crinkling as if they have been flipped through before. Some pages also have small bends in the corner that are hardly noticeable, but still I don't think this should have been marketed as a "New" book but these are minor and do not impair my reading so I will give it 5 stars. For the price ($35 when I bought it) I think it is a GREAT deal. This is basically a "Nutrition 101" level textbook for a college course, and considering all my textbooks for my degree (engineering) were ~$200-300 I would call this a steal at about 700 pages of collegiate content. Chapters are broken down as such:
1) The Science of Nutrition
2) Nutritional Assessment and Dietary Planning
3) Chemical, Biological, and Physiological Aspects of Nutrition
4) Carbohydrates
5) Proteins
6) Lipids
7) Energy Metabolism
8) Energy Balance and Body Weight Regulation
9) Physical Activity, Health, and Sports Nutrition
10) Water-Soluble Vitamins
11) Fat-Soluble Vitamins
12) The Major Minerals
13) The Trace Minerals
14) Life Cycle Nutrition
While I haven't finished reading the entire book, what I have read I would describe as well put together and it comes with useful nutritional charts on the inside cover for reference. I would recommend for anybody wanting to dive into the field of nutrition (as a hobby like myself, or maybe a first year nutrition student). If you already know quite a bit about nutrition, I would not recommend this book and would suggest instead getting a book on a subtopic...considering the first chapter is explaining things such as "scientific method", and even opens the book with "Choosing Nutrition as a Career Path"

Informative Text
Reviewed in the United States on 14 February 2010Verified Purchase
Book gives a good overview of the science behind nutrition. Way better then other books I have purchased. Contains interesting case studies that allow one to read about how nutritional intervention can help and also how nutrition plays into many diseases/conditions. Wasn't too difficult to read, lots of pictures definitely helped. Overall, an excellent introductory text to nutritional science.
