Medical Sciences: with STUDENTCONSULT access Paperback – 21 July 2009

4.7 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

Worldwide, undergraduate medical curricula are moving towards integration of basic medical and clinical sciences to enhance student understanding of how the basic sciences underpin clinical medicine. Recent rapid progress made in the understanding of cellular mechanisms and genomics, together with developments in technical clinical procedures, means that the amount of factual knowledge required for the effective practice of medicine can be overwhelming for the undergraduate. Understanding and synthesis of this knowledge is essential for effective application to the practice of clinical medicine. The team of clinical and scientific experts on this book integrates information from the diverse branches of medical science (such as cellular biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and genetics) with clinical examples to illustrate how dysfunction leads to disease. This book will give students of medicine a strong grounding in the basic sciences and how they inform clinical practice and medical understanding. First textbook of its kind, designed to complement Kumar and Clark's Clinical Medicine by covering the basic sciences in a clinical context. Reflects undergraduate medical curricula changes, particularly in the UK, which have significantly reduced the amount of time students spend learning the basics sciences. Mirrors the current integrated approach to teaching the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, general pathology) and provides all the student needs to know about these subjects in one textbook. Perfect introductory text for graduate medical students without a science background. Presentation, layout and design a mirror of Kumar and Clark's Clinical Medicine .Market: medical students and other students of the healthcare professions needing the basic sciences in an integrated, clinical context.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed

I was assigned this book for a nursing entrance exam, and for that purpose I feel that it was WAY over-detailed. However, most of the reviews come from medical students, for whom I feel this book is very well suited.

I have had this book for several years now. It was a very good reference book at the time I’m not sure if all the information will still be applicable now as medical books often get updated . However , the anatomy and physiology will be the same so at least 85 % will be relevant in my opinion .I have to admit , it was an expensive book at the time but then again , all medical reference books are expensive ! Nevertheless it was very good quality and came with a CD too .

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornerstone of medical study

This is like the bible of 1st and 2nd year medical students everywhere. It gives you MASSES of information at a basic to intermediate level of detail on a MASSIVE range of topics. I would use this as a core text in the early years of study and just as a reference text later on. Would definitely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars For me not clear enough

    For me not clear enough.
As a general practitioner, having left "behind me" so much of theoretical stuff after medical school and with so much new science since I left medical school I was looking for a general encyclopedia to catch up quickly with some subjects when needed.
Well for this purpose the book is really not "friendly" written, and for medical students it may not be deep enough for certain subjects.
Surely a lot of information, but personally I found it of little use.

A brilliant physiology textbook! A very good read for beginners and a must for medical students. Well structured and illustrated, I use it even now in me penultimate year of med school. Definitely recommended.
