Heat and Light (David Unaipon Award Winners Series) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

In this award-winning work of fiction, Ellen van Neerven takes her readers on a journey that is mythical, mystical, and still achingly real. Over three parts, she takes traditional storytelling and gives it a unique, contemporary twist. In "Heat," we meet several generations of the Kresinger family and the legacy left by the mysterious Pearl. In "Water," a futuristic world is imagined and the fate of a people threatened. In "Light," familial ties are challenged and characters are caught between a desire for freedom and a sense of belonging. Heat and Light presents an intriguing collection while heralding the arrival of an exciting new talent in Australian writing.

heart-wrenching at times given the subject matter, but a very enjoyable read. The prose is engaging and a pleasure to read. If it isn't already, it should be made a set reading for senior high school students and not just in Australia. Great example of contemporary writing.

Magical realism - or is it realism edged with sci-fi - is just part of this beautiful writing from Ellen v N. The honesty tinges the fragility of figures whose psychic pain goes back generations. This writing disturbs and moves. Looking forward to her next book!

The first part "Heat" of this very interesting book is worth 5 stars. The other two parts are not quite up there, in my view, but are still good to read. This is certainly the best book depicting aboriginal life that I've read and the author was only twenty-five when this book was published. This is a book that deserves a wide readership.

Interesting read. Not structured like a standard novel but set into three distinct part with many different stories throughout. Found it easy to process and read but does require a bit of thinking. Would recommend if you're a fan of indigenous writing, science fiction and good story telling

So wonderful to read a book of stories from an indigenous and female voice. Each story interconnected but all self contained. Beautifully written. Looking forward to more from this author.
