About the Author

Johnny Allen was the foundation director of the Australian Centre for Event Management (ACEM) at the University of Technology, Sydney, and continues teaching and research activities with that organisation. He was event manager for the Darling Harbour Authority from 1989 until 1996, and special event manager for Tourism New South Wales from 1996 to 1999. Johnny has an extensive career in event planning, including public events and festivals in both urban and regional areas. He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2007 for his services to the event industry and event education. William O′Toole has been creating and managing events for over 30 years, ranging from public festivals to corporate events. As an events development specialist, Bill worked for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dubai (UAE), the European Union and numerous local authorities, establishing events strategies and event management curriculum and training. His event project management system (EPMS) is used in events around the world. he is the director of the Project management graduate program at the University of Sydney. currently, he is the senior adviser to the event management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) based in the USA, Canada, UK and South Africa, developing international competency levels and standards for event management. Rob Harris is a senior lecturer and the director of the Australian Centre for Event Management, University  of Technology, Sydney. Rob has been involved in event management training, education and curriculum development for more than 10 years and was a foundation director of the Festivals and Events Association of Australia. He has an international reputation as an event management educator, having delivered short executive development postprograms through to Masters level courses in a variety of locations around the world, including the United Kingdom, Malaysia, China and New Zealand, as well as throughout Australia. Rob is a co–author of the texts Festival and Special Event Management and Regional Event Management Handbook, as well as a number of event–related journal articles. he is on the editorial board of the international journal Even Management, and is the founder of the recently established Event Education and Research Network Australasia. Ian McDonnell is a senior lecturer in the faculty of Business′s School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism at the University of Technology, Sydney, where he teaches management and marketing of leisure and tourism services, including the very popular event management subject. In 1996, along with Johnny Allen he started the first higher education course in event management, the Executive certificate in Event Management. this book came from the lack of a text that could be used in such courses.

William O'Toole is a leading trainer and consultant in the events industry around the world. He has worked on events in over 40 countries and his vast experience is distilled in his three international textbooks on event management and event strategies. Recently he developed the events strategies for Dubai, the Supreme Commission for Tourism in Saudi Arabia and the European Commission in Jordan. His workshops are replete with current examples of events and include the development of an event management system for each of the workshop participants.

On the final day of training each person takes away a raft of information, checklists and a template system they can use immediately for their next event.

A small sample of the organisations that have sent their staff for training include: Zain, King Fahad Specialist Hospital, United Nations, Dubai Shopping Festival, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Ernst and Young, Emaar Properties, Department of Civil Aviation.

William developed events ranging from corporate events to festivals to conferences. This front line experience combined with a understanding of the underlying management processes, led William to write the first leading global textbook on event management. His adaptation of project management and risk management to events is used by event teams around the world. His latest international textbook, Events Development and Feasibility, demonstrates how countries, regions, cities and companies can build an effective events portfolio that maximise their value and the return on investment.

His workshops and training sessions are well known for imparting experience and knowledge in a captivating manner. At the same time they are delivered with a solid foundation in project and risk management. William originated the Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) and is a key advisor to the International Competency Standard in Event Management.

His recent workshops and consultancies include the United Nations in the Sudan and Uganda, Qatar Foundation, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and the International Festival and Events Association. Personal Info

William's idea of a holiday is to stay at home in the beautiful Bondi Beach, swimming each day across the bay. His family are all nearby and occasionally he treats them to a trip to one of the many counties he works in. He reads widely including culture, philosophy, mathematics and history. He spends too much time working on a software system for special events.
