Great book to supplement FirstAid
Reviewed in the United States on 26 February 2013Verified Purchase
I like the tables, charts, and diagrams in this text. However, you definitely need to work with more than one review book when studying for the boards. First Aid is a nice companion text to fill in some gaps and supply mnemonics to help the student learn the material; just note that FirstAid was written by medical students and there are errata posted online that you should fix before learning it...it is nice that Kaplan is written by professionals who teach the subject matter, so errors are minimal in the Kaplan text.

Good Review Book
Reviewed in the United States on 13 February 2010Verified Purchase
The book itself is great since it gives you some more info than the FA alone and has a better organization of the material, but i have only gone over a couple of sections. Get the book if you want a little more info than whats in the FA or you prefer table and diagrams.
The internet access questions are of very limited help when it comes to STEP studying, so i would not get the book because of the internet access.
Also, the book does not have a code like most review books that you have to scratch off. When you register on the site it will ask you, what the last word on a certain page is, and thats the code. Just read the pages where it talks about logging in to the site to register.

Better than first aid!
Reviewed in the United States on 30 October 2013Verified Purchase
During med 1 and med 2 I found this book to be more helpful than first aid.
Although first aid has all the general highlights of what you need to know this book has the highlight + added detailed needed for you to pass step 1 and your in class exams!
This book is the reason I passed the behavioral science shelf!
It also goes hand and hand with the kaplan videos so if you have the videos you can easily make further notes on this book!

out-dated, stick to the newer editions.

during 2012, FA had 28 pages of changes, don't expect medEssentials to be too far off, some useful tables but for the most part just a slightly more detailed rehash of FA, stick to what's been proven effective: FA+uworld.

Get it your 1st year of med school
Reviewed in the United States on 9 February 2011Verified Purchase
This book is much better than the kaplan review books for USMLE/Comlex Step 1. It is a comprehensive summary book with enough detail that you can use it in your course work for the first 2 years of medical school. I recommend buying it your first year and reviewing it as you progress through the courses. It has way too much info to be used as a review book for step 1 studying. Stick to FIRST AID for that.
