5.0 out of 5 stars Before you can get the most from your study of French grammar, ...
Verified Purchase... you need to polish up your memory of English grammar. So if you're a bit rusty regarding future perfects or descriptive vs. demonstrative adjectives, this book is very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for understanding how the rules compare to English.
Verified PurchaseThis is the best French learning book I have tried. It uses the principles of English grammar to demonstrate a variety of rules for French grammar.
It was recommended by a retired French professor and I am not dissapointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book to start the grammar lessons
Verified PurchaseThe book is generally great to understand the grammar although I found it to lack more complex examples that allows the student to get a good grip of the language. Even though it is a little light for me, I found it packed with sufficient amount of details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for students of French
Verified PurchaseI first came across a version of this book back in the late 90s when I was studying French at A-level, and I'm certain it helped me to transition from being 'good' at French to 'excellent' at French. I subsequently ended up doing a degree in languages.
The key to language learning is understanding how grammar works in your native tongue, which you can then apply to other languages. For many native English speakers, we know how to string a sentence together through instinct rather than analysis; this is where this book is invaluable. We instinctively know to say 'I give him the book' but know we can't say 'I give the book him'. Unless you're particularly good at grammar, you may struggle to explain that it's to do with the position of the indirect object, and that you'd need a preposition to make the second sentence work. If you're struggling to understand what I've just said, then you need this book!
Not only does this book fill in the gaps of your grammatical knowledge of English, it then shows you how it works in French.
All in all, je dirais que ce livre est essentiel pour les étudiants de la langue française ;-)
