Absolutely essential: Buy this book if you have ever thought of ever using or making a database
Reviewed in Canada on 23 July 2016Verified Purchase
This is an excellent resource, it describes database systems very well, and teaches the reader how to make a database system that is rock solid. It is difficult to read as other reviewers describe due to the subject matterhaving a diverse and steep learning curve. The primary focus of the book is clearly relational databases (SQL) but does discuss NoSQL databases. If you master the information in this book and you have a use-case for NoSQL, it will be a trivial concern as 99% of the book actually applies to all database concepts. Some topics are quite difficult to understand, but there are no other ways to more clearly describe them, it's the nature of the work. Later DBA works relies on all of this information exactly. Also, don't cheap out and buy an earlier edition, buy this one.

Great Intro to SQL
Reviewed in the United States on 12 November 2018Verified Purchase
Had to buy for the class... however, for someone new to SQL/relational DB, this book was well written, detailed enough, full of examples and visuals (which help tremendously with understanding the concepts). I also used a MS SQL book that was much more technical- with more code, but very hard to read.

Great for big DBs, maybe too much for small DBs
Reviewed in the United States on 7 January 2015Verified Purchase
If you want to create a quick database for a small number of users with low CRUD (create, read, update, delete) operations for your data this book is way more than you need. However, if you need to create a database for many users, with many Entities, a high number of CRUD operations, and gets high performance . . . then this is a great book for you. This book offers many examples in multiple flavors of SQL, so you get a well rounded education on Relational Database Management Systems. If you just want something quick & dirty, there are better, cheaper, faster options.
