As the tools available through commercial GIS software have grown in sophistication, a need has emerged to instruct users on the best practices of true GIS analysis. In this sequel to the best-selling ""The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 1"", author Andy Mitchell delves into the more advanced realm of spatial measurements and statistics. The premise of ""The ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis, Volume 2"", targets GIS technology as having been well used as a display and visualization medium but not so widely used as an implement for real analysis. Covering topics that range from identifying patterns and clusters to analyzing geographic relationships, this book is a valuable resource for GIS users performing complex analysis.

A good general reference - a good place to start with spatial analysis
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2014Verified Purchase
A good reference book to give you an idea of scope but it does not give you a nuts and bolts description as to how to use ARC. There is a good array of statistical techniques that can be used with ARC for spatial analysis which can be used to achieve the objectives described. Details of these techniques are outside the scope of the book but there is sufficient to appreciate the scope of the work in hand.

The one-stop source for all geostatistics and spatial statistics for ESRI.

Complete with chapters that cover various spatial statistics tools and geostatistics, I bought this book as a reference text for a GIS course. It has walkthroughs of a variety of different tools that are provided in ArcGIS' Spatial Statistics tools and Geostatistical Analyst toolbox, listing off all the required parameters and how the tools perform their functions. The diagrams are coloured and help the reader along with the rest of the material (which may get old really quickly).
Good book to have on hand when dealing with the Geostatistical Analyst and Spatial Statistics toolsets as it explains in depth the formulas and equations of how these tools are performed.

Excellent for beginners and for advanced to have as reference

Excellent, simple, reference book for GIS analysis. If you are a beginner with GIS analysis this book is ideal, at the same time, if you use more advanced methods, but are not constantly using the technology you will definitely want this as a reference. When in doubt with more complicated methodology, go back to the basics with this book. I lost it and got it again, this is how useful I think it is.

Bien pour se remettre à jour en statistique mais manque de description de l'utilisation des outils geostat de la ArcToolBox
Reviewed in France on 6 January 2013Verified Purchase

This is a great set of books and a must have for any GIS Professional. They break down the complicated processes of spatial analysis to a more basic and easier to understand level.
