Classroom discipline remains the single most common problem educators face in their day-to-day teaching. Because discipline problems are so prevalent and difficult to solve, many educators and specialists in related fields have attempted to provide help for teachers. Their suggestions come from a variety of perspectives and are based on different assumptions about the purposes of schooling and the capabilities of students.
Teachers often fail to scrutinise the assumptions on which these discipline approaches are based or to measure them against their own values and educational philosophy.
Teachers often fail to scrutinise the assumptions on which these discipline approaches are based or to measure them against their own values and educational philosophy.
This text is designed to help teachers explore various approaches to classroom discipline along with their own personal philosophy. The text emphasizes informed decision-making. The teacher must have an understanding of the assumptions behind a disciplinary approach, as well as the theory and practical applications of that approach.

I had to purchase this book as a textbook for my classroom management unit in a Master's programme. The approach taken by the authors is helpful in that it scans across multiple models and provides a consistent approach to assessing the merits (or otherwise) of each model. However, when my class was divided into groups and I was required to do a presentation on one model (Canter), I found that when we researched primary sources, the textbook mis-represented Canter's views. By the way, I don't have a preference for Canter's model. When you read the later chapters, it becomes clear which models the authors prefer because they have neutral remarks but a distinct lack of disadvantages. From my reading, the authors subscribe to the "Humanism" philosophy. I'm not against that philosophy but as a textbook purporting to present all models for teachers to decide on their own approach, they are blatantly not balanced in their presentation of the Behaviourism models. I think if the book was balanced, it would be a powerful tool as a teacher reference.
