Reviews

Very poorly run. I love psychology and found the content interesting, however the 2 hour weekly workshop was an absolute waste of time, reading and required knowledge was poorly communicated with students, and overall just a hot mess. Tutorials were generally unhelpful, assignments were seemingly unrelated to the topics being learnt at the time, and feedback was negligible and useless. Absolutely would avoid if possible

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2019

Fresh off the exam I'll give my review of PSY1011. Lots of different areas are covered and it is quite interesting, but consultations are pretty much useless unless it is the week before or of the assignment submission date. That being said, it really depends on your tutor because mine didn't really help at all and we received proper assignment clarification by another tutor that subbed our lesson once. Whatever is taught during the consultation is not examinable so you're not missing out on content by not attending (they aren't compulsory). Assignments are boring and really vague, but you can get a distinction on them even if you leave it last minute. Lectures, like all uni lectures, can just be watched at home unless you want to listen/participate in the discussions that some lecturers do. They are two-hour long lectures so I'd recommend coffee if you tend to get sleepy during such. All the lecturers were really good because they know their stuff. Lecture content is examinable so it's best to watch all the lectures even if you don't attend, and this year one lecture stream was live-streamed every week. The exam was surprisingly easy and I crammed the content a few days prior. That being said if you do PSY1011 make textbook notes !! They'll help with the weekly quizzes and will help you avoid cramming and stress because you might have a tight exam schedule. Overall it is a good subject if you like Psych or do not completely despise Psych but don't be shocked if there is a lot to memorise and understand. I did it as an elective without completing VCE Psych. It's a doable subject even if some things seem useless at times ^^

Lectures are very vague and it's probably best if you're physically present for the lectures. Consultations can be quite boring but helpful every now and then. Marking is extremely harsh so it's extremely hard to get to a HD.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Super interesting unit but the marking is just waaaay too harsh. The average grade is 6.2 or something like that which is just crazy... Still, interesting and engaged lectureres and good tutors! Definitely worth doing for an elective if you can!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Very easy marks, very easy to do well. Really easy to understand and digest the content, especially if you find it interesting. Great first-year unit.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

Interesting content and overall unit limited by pitiful study resources (correct past quiz answers are hidden, no summary lectures/ small 20 question revision quiz). A word of caution for those who don't learn well from textbook readings.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

Did not understand what to do for the assignments. The consultations were boring, the tutor basically just read out the lecture slides. Activities in the consultations were not helpful. On the bright side, I found the content learned in lectures quite interesting, many topics were covered in VCE.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

the assignments are so confusing and barely any guidance is given at all

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

This is a good psychology foundation unit that would be interesting not only to people who want to become psychologists but for everyone in general! Contact hours are minimal and attendance not compulsory, however tutorials are not relevant to the content and therefore useless. Overall a good unit!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2016

Very dry. Lectorials were just extremely awkward as no one really participates due to the under par "hosts" (for lack of better term). The lecturers were generally good and knowledgable, though some were boring (especially the first one). Consultations were purely based on assignments and were pretty useless. They only exist to clarify the unnecessarily confusing assignments which aren't complimented well by course material. The structure of this unit really needs improving
