Reviews

I have never reviewed a class here before but after completing this class I have simply had to. This has been the single worst class I have ever completed in my 3 years at monash. The tutors are horrible, the unit coordinator is very poorly organised, boring to listen to, and is simply disrespectful. If I didn't need this class for a course transfer I would undoubtably have dropped this class in week 1. I have not learnt a single thing from the lectures, tutorials, or class activities and have learnt more with 5 minutes on google. Unless you absolutely have to and are absolutely certain you can't try something else don't enrol in this poorly run, pointless class. I cannot recommend that you don't enrol in this class enough.

If you have not done methods you will have to work hard to learn the content. Found the lectures slow and dry, I watched them online on 1.5x speed. The tut classes would have been helpful except the tut I had was not very good at explaining the material.

Will need to work very hard to do well if you have not done methods. good knowledge of Year 10 math is a recommended before taking this unit. Really recommend printing Simon's notes and taking them to the lectures. This unit is the most content heavy unit i did in first year and will really swallow you up if you are not caught up. Content is incredibly rushed. and Simon was usually late to most lectures. Tutes were great and if you have any questions about the problem sets they will be happy to help you, Chris Brown is a great tutor and helped me with everything I needed

Not too bad, just didn't enjoy it. Takes up a lot of hours in your week.

If you have enrolled in this unit, then congrats as this is actually a very fun unit, though you really have to pay attention in lecture and also do not skip tutorials as tutors always break down stuff Simon rushed through in lectures. It is challenging indeed, so make sure do as many problem set as you can:) Gd luck!

Incredibly interesting course, but if you haven't done any sort of maths, then you will find it incredibly difficulty. Do the problem sets assigned, as some of the questions in exams and tutorial tasks require actually understanding the concept behind the content rather than memorising the steps and formulas to solve the question.

Great unit to start your math career. It is an advanced overview of things you hope you learned properly at school plus a little extra. Regardless of your math level, it is always good to practice the basics. Simon Teague is a great teacher with a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy kind of sense of humour. He is very patient, answers all the questions, even on weekends, organizes extra practice sessions when needed. The unit is not easy though, it is packed with material, especially closer to the end and requires a lot of time for practicing and writing assignments. But if you love math this is exactly what you are after.

if you're doing this unit because either you had lackluster results in VCE or as a prerequisite for a transfer to a different degree then prepared to do a lot of work. This is no walk in the park, if you have poor mathematical skills it will definitely transfer to this unit. Its essentially a year of year 12 maths methods into 12 weeks. My tute was a young woman who is a current student at Monash, her teaching skills weren't the greatest as everyone in the class always utterly confused. This unit has a high fail rate, so ask questions regardless of how silly it is as there are many students repeating this unit (only runs in semester 1). Also, the lecturer John (also the chief examiner) is very sassy so pay very close attention to what he is saying as he dislikes repeating himself.

John's a great lecturer, and a great guy. A useful first unit for those coming in with a moderate to strong background from High School.
