Reviews

A little content heavy but if you stay on top of the content, summarise each week etc getting a good score is doable.

Struggled with this subject from the get-go. Didn't do chem in VCE and still managed to pass CHM1011 however, didn't pass CHM1022. Found there was a huge leap from sem 1 chem to sem 2 in terms of difficulty of the content as well as the speed that they teach it. I feel like this subject required a lot more assumed knowledge and sped through the fundamentals. In saying that though, there are plenty of resources for students to utilise like weekly tutes, PASS sessions, and lunchtime help sessions (which I didn't take advantage of). Overall, content was more interesting than CHM1011 but much more difficult to grasp if chem isn't your strong suit. However, help is readily available if need be.

Not well run the semester I took this unit, however have spoken to members of faculty who have spoken of improvements to the course.

Students who have never done chemistry high school chemistry may find this a struggle as it introduces new concepts very fast. However, there is A LOT of support available for students of all levels. The lunchtime help and PASS sessions and tutorials are a big big help. And because you can jump from one tutorial to another to find the tutor that caters to your need, this is helpful too. You will cover organic and inorganic chemistry. While they are big topics, there is a focus on key areas such as molecule naming and simple reaction mechanisms that once you understand, you really understand. Much much less maths vigorous than CHM1011. you only end up using 1 math equation throughout the exam. And it's given on the formula sheet. A must do if you wanted to continue Chem into the second year. Worthwhile if you had electives to use up.

Well, this was better than Chm1022, but the unit requires more effort than some 2nd-year units to stay up to date especially if you didn't do high school chemistry or chm1011. If you want to do well make sure you attend the PASS classes because I thought they went through better content than the actual tutorials. A lot of people struggled on the exam because they didn't know how to do mechanisms for esterification and amide synthesis. Anyways a good unit overall. Easy to do well in.

Found the organic lecturer at the start to be really difficult to follow, he didn't seem interested in teaching first year level students and was often late. That being said, the labs were engaging and the Inorganic lecturers were much more interested in supporting the learning of students.

A difficult but rewarding unit with majoritively great lecturers and TA's. Be prepared to work hard and you will be able to do well.

LOVED THIS UNIT and the content was VERYYY interesting. The lecturers were very supportive and the tutorials were helpful. Constant study will help achieve a HD.

Labs are slightly challenging but doable. Overall, it's a fun unit and a stepping stone for second year chemistry units.

a lot of work required considering its first year chem. really need to stay on top and definitely not one that can be crammed just before exams!
