Reviews

There was a lot of content so you really need to keep up and make sure you understand everything, but this was such an interesting unit! The lecturer (Michael) was so engaging and funny and really made the content understandable and fun. You can do very well in the essay if you put in the work, and the other assignments are simple. Keep up with the quizzes to help with the exam!!! Don't do this unit if you don't have a genuine interest in human biology. It may be a planet unit, but it's certainly not a bludge!!! Michael says it's the hardest 100 level biology unit; based on the sheer amount of content, I'd say that's about right, especially without doing high school biology.

This unit is content heavy but was very interesting. The amazing, passionate lecturer makes it engaging and always cracks jokes! Make sure you do all the quizzes as it will help you in the final exam.

I found myself actually enjoying listening to lectures for this unit even on weekend nights as the lecturer is really engaging and actually makes you want to learn! The content itself can be quite tricky though and definitely requires a lot of revising.

Michael Gillings, the Lecturer was absolutely amazing! I could listen to him all day. He is the best lecturer I have ever had and probably will have and is super engaging. He does live experiemtns and practical experiments in the lecture theatre so he is the one lecture you would feel compelled to attend because you don't want to miss the fun. He makes you want to come to lectures. I did no sciences in high school let alone biology and I received an upper-end distinction. I always thought I was no good at science but I really enjoyed this subject. Keep up with lectures and take notes, consult the prescribed textbook. The course material is very very interesting. If you are interested or curious about science i would recommend this unit without hesitation! Update: three years on, I can still attest that he is the best lecturer I've had at macquarie. I later found out that Michael was ranked as the top 5 lecturers in Australia, which explained his excellent delivery.

If you did Bio in high school this unit is a breeze, the essay was a bit heavy but manageable. The lecture before the final exam is really important as the lecturer goes through really critical points that will definitely be in the exam. Still really easy if you didn't do science in school :)

Great lecturer, and excellent unit - especially if you did HSC Biology

Awesome unit. Very entertaining lecturer and content was interesting. I have minimal science background so found the workload pretty hefty, yet still thoroughly enjoyed the unit and felt like I took a lot from it.

A lot of interesting content, but can be difficult if you have not done biology before. 3 lectures a week - but they seem to go by quickly because of the very engaging lecturer. I would recommend this subject to anyone interested in human biology/natural world.

Lecturer was great. A lot of content but the final was doable even without past papers. Essay is worth a lot, so it is worth investing a lot of time into. Highly recommend going through and doing quizzes every week.
