Product description
Review
Key Concepts in Gender Studies is testament to the interest, energy and dynamism of feminism today. Now in a revised second edition, it must have been incredibly tough to set the limit at 50, but Jane Pilcher and Imelda Whelehan have done it again: produced a book that is lively, important and accessible. With entries that cover key concepts, historical terms, theoretical arguments, and activism from Malala to SlutWalk to transgender, this book offers an excellent introduction to debates in contemporary gender studies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very basic
Verified PurchaseIf you’re a complete beginner this is useful to give you a general introduction to the basic concepts of gender studies, but it really is only a jumping off point. It can be useful to dip in to if you forget a theory you’re supposed to have in the back of your mind whilst reading something else but it definitely feels more like an A-level type book than anything higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner or as a reference
Verified PurchaseA very brief overview of the subject of gender studies. Missing some newer terms (intersectionality, etc), but could be made better with a new edition. Perfect book to use as a reference for basic history/definitions,

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally Brilliant, and not too partisan--and it's British
Verified PurchaseI've recently read 20-30 books about femininity & masculinity, and Pilcher's and Whelehan's overview is *extremely* smart and useful. They are deeply read, intellectually fair, and strong prose stylists. Most of the entries include both simple, direct definitions and more elaborate and complex analyses of concepts such as the double standard, the family, & second wave feminism. This balance makes the book a good choice for advanced beginners as well as for those who've studied gender issues and want further guidance. On its quality, my primary complaint is that some entries come across as lists of approaches, rather than as coherent syntheses. I understand that some of these concepts are so charged that they have generated multiple responses, but I'd still prefer my authors to manage a little more. But this problem is the exception rather than the rule; generally they balance an overview with real guidance about the topic. My larger complaint is about the price. $40 is a lot for a paperback under 200pp--I would order it for my course if it cost $25. P.S. The reference to "British" in the review title is just to say that since the authors are British, many of the cultural references they use to provide context are from British rather than American history. I generally found the references clear and helpful, regardless, but it was noticeable enough to point out.
