    • A
5.0 out of 5 stars Review from someone who’s lived 12 years in Japan:
Reviewed in Japan on 23 January 2024
      Verified Purchase
I’ve lived in Japan twice, totalling 12 years, and if I wanted to give a good, all-round explanation of the country to someone unfamiliar with it, I might as well just hand them a copy of this book. But even those who’ve lived here a long time will learn something new because of the breadth of topics covered. The sequencing and presentation of connections between topics is very logical, and facilitates this book’s clear elucidation of the essential characteristics that run through Japanese society, whether those characteristics are nationwide, homogenous, harmonious and stable, or contradictory, contested, changing over time, localised or group-specific. Multiple perspectives are appropriately presented. While a book of this scope can’t possibly go into extraordinarily detailed depth, it nevertheless does give well-distilled information on each topic. And to delve deeper into any particular issue, plenty of further reading suggestions are provided. This book gives exactly what it claims to, and anyone should be highly satisfied with it.
