The 12th Edition of Anton's Elementary Linear Algebra: Applications Version gives an elementary treatment of linear algebra that is suitable for a first course for undergraduate students. The aim is to present the fundamentals of linear algebra in the clearest possible way; pedagogy is the main consideration. Calculus is not a prerequisite, but there are clearly labeled exercises and examples (which can be omitted without loss of continuity) for students who have studied calculus.

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful update on an excellent book
Verified PurchaseI read Anton back in 1993. loved everything including the very cool application sections.
linear algebra is a much harder subject than calculus. it builds strength in abstraction.
i think Anton strikes a wonderful balance between elementry and advanced. somethings will need to be read more than once but explanations are well written so you go a little furthet with each effort.
i also think the 12th edition does a spectacular job at refreshing the layout. it really is one of the nicest looking math books i have seen and it also somehow helps in the ease of reading.
other books i think also stand out include Larson and Gareth Williams. it's quite okay to own a few books on linear algebra. this book should be kept.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terse, and to the point with practice problems that encourage further reading
Verified PurchaseEach section is terse, it often builds on previous sections which conclude with problems that require using what you have just read and previously practiced. The problems in each section also start with simple calculations and layer concepts as you practice them sequentially.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly revised and misinformed
Verified PurchaseWhile I greatly appreciate the textbook is ring-bound, making it much easier for exercises, the book was poorly revised and poorly written. On numerous occasions, the book references sections that do not exist, examples that do not exist, and fails to provide clear reasoning for some of the proofs and computational examples throughout. While it is okay for an extra tool in a class in elementary linear algebra, I would not recommend it in the slightest for being used as a primary learning tool. It needs immense revisions, better-developed questions that don't repeat themselves, and greater emphasis on the author's providing explanation and reasoning for their work throughout.
