I was listening to Isabel Pafford's History 4A lectures, podcast by UC Berkeley, and I was getting a little frustrated by her frequent references to "Freeman". So I did a little digging, figured out the text to which she was referring, and lo and behold, Amazon carries it. I ordered it, got a good deal, and I'm glad I did.
Detailed enough without being too heavy, it strikes a nice balance between academic thoroughness and layman's readability. I'm part of the way through, and I think I am going to enjoy it.

Egypt, Greece and Rome is regarded as one of the best general histories of the ancient world. It is written for the general reader and the student coming to the subject for the first time and provides a reliable and highly accessible point of entry to the period. The volume begins with the early civilizations of Sumer (modern Iraq) and continues through to the Islamic invasions and the birth of modern Europe after the collapse of the western Roman empire. The book ranges beyond political history to cover philosophy, art and literature. A wide range of maps, illustrations and photographs complements the text. The second edition incorporates new chapters on the ancient Mediterranean and the Ancient Near East, as well as extended coverage of Egypt.

Product description
Review
This is the second edition of what was an excellent book in its first edition, and is now stronger and even more useful ... If you did not add the first edition to your school or college library, I recommend that you do so. If you did, the second edition should still beckon you to include it. The Journal of Classics Teaching When Deborah James reviewed the first edition of this book for JACT in 1997 she said "it beats with the pulse of modern scholarship on the ancient Mediterranean" and drew attention among other merits to the way in which the presentation of the great civilizations in this book enabled the reader to view events in context. This remains one of the great strengths of the book, and with this strength there goes the author's ability to write with skill, precision and vividness for a wide audience. The Journal of Classics Teaching

5.0 out of 5 stars Egypt, Greece and Rome: Civilizations of the Ancient mediterranean
Verified PurchaseAn excellent book. I am a fan of Charles Freeman, he writes very interestingly for the non specialist. Lots of stories told round a detailed knowledge of the history. What could just be a dry series of names and dates really comes to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good overview to Mediterranean history
Verified PurchaseThis is an essential book for everybody who considers him/herself being interested about Greek, Roman and Mediterranean history. It provides a very well structured and informative overview about cultures, histories and people of the time. In addition, even if the book is highly academic, it is so well written that it reads almost as a leisure book. For me the most interesting part was actually the beginning, the Mesopotamian times, as I have not read about those as much as later cultures. What is also very useful is the structure of the chapters, each containing a list of references for further studies. Definitely worth to read and get!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the overview I was looking for!
Verified PurchaseEven though I teach Western civilization courses, I found Freeman's book a delightfully easy read, even for non-historians, of the artistic, religious, cultural, and intellectual traditions of these great civilizations, and, believe it or not, I also learn at least a few things I didn't know or find clarification of things I thought I knew. His The Closing of the Western Mind is one of my favorite books, and I find this one a delight for the mind as well.
